BRUTAL ROBBERY OF CHINESE. SEVERE STRICTURE BY JUDGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Juhe 20. Describing the crime as cowardly and contemptible, Mr. Justice Northcroft this morning sentenced Matthety Wallace Munro, aged 25, unemployed, and Adrien Chenot, aged 37, to three years’ hard labour on a charge of robbery with violence, the victim being a Chinese. 1 Chenot, described as a French naval deserter, was also sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, to be cumulative,on a charge of housebreaking, for which he was on probation at the time of the present offence. 1 The Judge added: “It is because there is no prevalence of this type of offence at present that I do not order the flogging of the prisoners.” ; Counsel said the affair was the result of drink.
