HURWORTH CARNIVAL

POSITION OF CANDIDATES. , GENERAL NEWS OF DISTRICT. The position in the Hurworth queen carnival last night was: Town (Coral Lovegrove) 6050 votes, Sports (Yolande Campbell) 5740, Country (Mary Gilbert) 5040. Over 70 people attended a party given by Mr. and Mrs. S. Lovegrove at thenhome in Gover Street, New Plymouth, on Tuesday. Cards and dancing were i enjoyed. The gathering was held for the benefit of the town candidate in the queen carnival. A flag five hundred evening was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. F. King, Hurworth, on Saturday, the proceeds being for the Sports queen. At the winning table, which also held the travelling, flag, were Mr. and Mrs. C. Ross, Mrs. F. King and Mr. P. Gilbert. On Saturday the Country committee held a successful flag five hundred evening in the Welboum hall. The prizewinners, who also held th 6 travelling flag, were Mrs. Andrews, and Messrs. J. Lobb, R. Gilbert and Gredig Copsolation prizes were awarded Mesdames Brooks and Parr, Miss N. Richardson and Mr. D. Wadsworth. A competition was won by Mr. J. Lobb. . , A euchre party was held in the Frankleigh Park hall on Monday evening tor the Country queen, the winners being Mrs. Bendall and Mrs. N. Allen, and Mr. H. Allen and Mr. Frost. On Monday evening a card party was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. 0. Ross for the Sports queen. winners were Miss N. Gilbert and Mr. P. . Gilbert, Miss K. Blizzard and Mr. L. Gilbert senr. receiving consolation prizes. On Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. A. Rider were hostesses at a card party at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. R. Gilbert The winners were Mrs. F. Harrison and Miss J. Harrison and Mr. H. Farmer and Mr. K. Webb. Consolation prizes were awarded Mrs. H. Farmer and Mr. B. Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan were hosteses at a card evening on Wednesday evening for the Sports queen, eight tables being engaged for play. The prize-winners were Mrs. R. Cole and Mrs. F. King and Mr. F. Gilbert and Mr. C. Ross. On Thursday evening the Country committee held its fortnightly dance and ‘euchre party in the hall. Owing to the wintry weather the attendance was not as large as usual, but a big fire made the conditions pleasant in the supperroom, where 13 tables were engaged tor euchre. The prizewinners were Mrs. C., Gilbert and Mrs. F. Harrison and, Mr. L. Gilbert junr. and Mr. Berridge (after playing off with Mr. J. Burkett). The Paramount Dance Band provided music for the dances, an extra dance being played for by Mrs. F. King. A mystery chain waltz was won by Mrs. R. Woods and partner and Mr. D. Wadworth and partner and 'a Monte Carlo dance by Mrs. A.' Rider and Mr. B. Allan. Competitions were won by Mr. W. Sole ana Mr. Robert Burkett. Mr. H. Farmer was master of ceremonies. Yolande Campbell, the Sports queen, is an inmate of the public hospital. .. ; . Mr. K. Eva, Tongaporutu, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Eva, Atkinson Road. Mrs.. Young and Mrs., Williamson are staying’.with Mr.»and Mrs. C. Ross.
