SHOOTING AT TOKO

RIFLE CLUB ACTIVITIES. CONTEST ON KING’S BIRTHDAY. Under splendid conditions the Toko Rifle Club’s shoot on the King’s birthdsy was thoroughly successful, over 20 members competing. A. Hignett secured first place with a total of 100, and E. C. Milne, with 97, was second. L. Petch won the button. The scores were:—

KAPONGA WINS INTER-CLUB SHOOT MATCH AGAINST TOKO RIFLEMEN. A match between Toko and Kaponga at' Toko on Saturday resulted in an easy win for Kaponga. The conditions were good, a strong sun being responsible for low scoring at 600 yards. Details of the scores are:—

SOCIAL AT MANGATOKL FARMERS’. UNION GATHERING. The Mangatoki Farmers’ Union held I the second of a series of euchre parties and dances on Friday evening. Twenty tables were in play and a number of late arrivals increased the attendance at the dance. Mrs. Glentworth (8J games) won the women’s first prize for euchre and Mesdames Leslie and Taylor and Miss Simpson (8 games) tied for second place, Mrs. Leslie winning the play-off. Mr. D. Simpson (10J games) won the first prize for men and Mr. Colin Dawben (10 games) was second. Dance music was played by Mrs. W. Bennie and Mrs. Patten. GENERAL ITEMS. Avon Winter Bowling. A winter bowling competition was played at the Avon green on Monday among teams of three men each! F. Weston’s team won and, after a play-off among teams skipped by R. R. Curtis, T. Lawson and W. Hardy-Jones, Curtis’ team was runner-up. Stratford Caught in the Dusk. A sudden failure of the electric lights at Stratford about 4.30 p.m. yesterday caught many people, especially those in business, at an awkward hour. It was not completely dark, but with the sky heavily overcast the interiors of shops and offices were inconveniently murky. The lights were on again within a quarter of an hour. The cause of the failure was outside the control of the borough, reported the borough electrical engineer, Mr, A. E. Pollock, the supply from the Taranaki Power Board having failed. Names Confused.

The- secretary of the Stratford Women’s Relief Committee, mentioned yesterday in connection with a clothes drive, is Mrs. E. J. Blick, not Mrs. A. D. Blick.

Eltham Football Dance. Mr. R. Bleakley and Miss E. Rowe were the winners of a Monte Carlo dance at. the Eltham Football Club dance on Saturday. There was a good attendance. Silver’s Sunbeams played the music and Mr. E. Townsend . was master of ceremonies. Tournament Golf Dance.

The Eltham golf tournament was concluded with a dance on Monday night. There was a splendid attendance of residents and visitors. Mr. L. T. Quin was master of ceremonies, and during the evening .the visitors to the tournament were thanked for their support.

Eltham Salvation Army Services. Special revival services were held at Eltham over the week-end by Brigadier Gray and Major Armstrong, of the Salvation Army. Over 40 persons presented themselves at the penitent form. Brigadier Gray commanded the Eltham corps during 1910 and 1911 and Major Armstrong was manager of the Salvation Army Boys’ Home at Eltham several years ago.

Rotokare Domain Board. i The Rotokare Domain Board was reelected to administer the reserve at a public meeting convened for the purpose at Eltham last night. The members are Messrs. C. H. White, I. J. Bridger, L. White, A. Pepperell, H. N. Murray, G. Morton and W. R. Stanners. The members are appointed for seven years, this term having just expired. Among the artists at a farewell concert at Eltham to Father R. McDermott was Mrs. J. O’Donoghue, Kaponga, who gave a song.
