“LIVE AND LET LIVE”
NEW ZEALAND’S CASE. TRADE WITH GREAT BRITAINAttention to the merits of New Zealand’s case for a place on the British market was drawn by Lord Biedisloe, former Governor-General of New Zealand, in a broadcast address before the Gloucester Chamber of Commerce, heard in New Zealand on Sunday night. The address was rebroadcast by New Zealand stations. z Lord Biedisloe told his audience he had been living in a bountiful country where farming interests predominated, and he had had as advisers a Government of farmers. The means taken by the British Government to meet the exigencies of the times were beyond criticism, but they would need modification in the light of recent developments. Among the requirements of agriculture was fair consideration of the claims of the farmers of the Empire. New Zealand had no possible market other than England for a mdfeh greater proportion of its produce than was the case with Australia and Canada. Lord Biedisloe said there should be an allocation to each Dominion for the products that could be supplied; in quantity and quality. The Empire trade motto should be “Live and let live, and there should be an Empire economic council to work out a long-range policy. The speaker testified to the fortitude with which the farmers of the Dominion had met recent difficulties, and, in expressing his wish for peace in the Pacific Ocean, he paid high tributes to New Zealanders as a whole and the Maori race.
