SWISS “NEW DEAL”
NOT FAVOURED IN REFERENDUM. BIG PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Berne, June 2. Owing to an adverse vote in the majority of the cantons the referendum for a Swiss “new deal” failed. Sad the referendum been carried the Goveniment would have spent £33,000,000 on public works and debt relief. ■ A total of 335,000 electors signed an appeal for the launching of this programme after a long and bitter struggle against , the Centre and Right Parties, who contended that the increased debt involved would have driven Switzerland off • the gold standard.
