ACTIVITIES OF BRANCHES / ?• 7 , 1 u . ■■■■— •. ' X. : ' Upper Mangorei: The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday afternoon, there being only-a fair attendance owing to the wet weather. Sympathy was expressed with the vice-president, Mrs. Hawke, whose son is still >ip hospital, and with Mrs. Johnston, who is recovering from an operation. The secretary, Mrs. R. Balsam, read a report on the’ I federation council meeting at New Plymouth on May 3. The roll call was en- . tided “A tasty vegetable dish.” A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Pearce for making a table cloth, with a large badge design in the institute colours, for. use at meetings. A darning competition conducted at the meeting under a time limit was judged by Miss Papps, the winners being Miss W. Jackson l, Mrs. R. Balsom 2, Mrs. Christmas 3. Demonstrations of smocking and honeycombing were given by .Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Christmas. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Pearce, Knauf and Rad1 ford. :
Frankley; The Frankley gymnasium Which had been decorated with pative ferns and flowers, was packed on Tuesday evening when over 80 members and J friends gathered to celebrate the first birthday of the Frankley Women’s Institute. Other institutes represented were Mangorei, Turi-township and Hurworth. Friends were also present from the Hurworth branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Miss Arden, president,, extended a welcome, The first half of the evening was devoted .to games and items, the items being: Xylophone solo, Mr, L. E., Smith; community singing; humorous recitation. Miss G. Hunter; vocal- solo, Mrs. Pearce; competition, arranged by Mrs, Thomas, won by Miss C. Paton (prize donated by Mrs. Thomas); Highland fling, Miss B.
Paton. Mrs. Jeffries Was at the piano. At supper with all lights out, Miss Arden lit the one candle on the birthday cake and called on the youngest member, Miss Kenny, to blow, it out. Miss Arden cut the oak©. Th© cake was made by Mrs, Alien and iced by Mrs. Jeffries. Mrs. Baker, for the Hurworth Division, and Mrs. Jackson, for Mangorei, responded to Miss Arden’s thanks'and expressed appreciation. Dancing followed, music being supplied by Mrs. Jeffries, Miss Goodacre and Miss Kenny (piano) and Mr. L. Smith (xylophone). Te Roti: At the monthly meeting on
May 24, Mrs. McAsey presided over a good attendance. Visitors were welcomed from Wanganui, Matamata, Waihou and Taiporohonui institutes. The points competition for the best plain rice pudding resulted: Mrs. E. Sharp 1, Mrs. Stokes 2 and Mrs. Cassidy and Miss Cockerton equal 3. Mrs. Hurley was welcomed as a new member. An interesting and useful demonstration on the art of English and Italian quilting was given by Miss F. O. Blake, Hawera, who had with her a collection of samples of her work. The roll call was washing day hints.' A flower wedding competition was won by Mrs. Stokes. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Cassidy 'ahd Miss Cockerton.
