CURRENT MARKET PRICES. AN INTERESTING COMPARISON. The following quotations for English farm stock appeared in a recent issue of the “Bucks Free' Press” received by Mr. W. T. Wells, Manaia. In view of their improvement on New Zealand current prices they should be of interest to Taranaki farmers:— HIGH WYCOMBE (Messrs. Lawrence and Son): Trade all round brisk and prices higher. Store pigs 21s 6d to 31s 6d, porkers up to 69s 6d, hogs to £9 3s, sows £9 2s 6d, fat calves to £7 ss, weaners to £2 Bs, sheep 455, heifers £l9 10s. Eggs from Is 3d to Is 7d per dozen, best browns Is Bjd. AYLESBURY (Messrs. Reader and Son): Although the area of supplies was restricted, this firm received at their market on Wednesday 150 sheep, 65 calves and 230 pigs. The best quality sheep made extremely high prices, tegs reaching 68s, ewes 635. Veal calves met a good trade up to £5 10s, and weaners £3 Is. For the fat pigs a sharp trade was experienced, and excellent prices were realised. Bacon hogs reached £8 2s 6d, porkers £3 16s, sows £9 17s 6d. Stores were in good demand from 20s 6d to 27s 6d. From next Monday an extended area will be open. (Messrs. W. Brown and Co.): For the time of year there was a. large entry of cattle forward at this auction on Wednesday, and a seasonable supply of sheep. Bullocks and heifers of good quality met a steady trade and were disposed of at recent quotations, but other grades and cows met hardly so keen an inquiry. Sheep met a keen trade throughout, and every pen was disposed of at advanced rates. Prices: Bullocks up to £22, heifers to £2l 15s, cow-heifers to £l6 2s 6d, wethers to 70s 6d, tegs to 67s 6d, and ewes to 70s each.

READING (Messrs. Thimbleby and Shorland): On Saturday this firm had entry of over 40 freshly calved cows and heifers included in their weekly sale of store stock. The best lots made up to £27 10s, £26 10s., £26, £25 15s, £25 10s, £25 (twice), etc., and with the exception of about half a dozen lots a clearance was effected. Gilts made up to £8 10s, £8 ss, etc.; 10-weeks-old pigs to 31s, 8-weeks-old pigs to 295. Best heifer calves made up to 78s.

(Messrs. Thimbleby and Shorland): On Monday this firm had an excellent entry of about 70 cattle. Polled Shorthorn crossbred heifers made up to £22 15s, with quotations to 44s per cwt.; Aberdeen Angus crossbred ’heifers to £22 15s, Shorthorn heifers to £2l, Devon steers to £22. A large entry of fat cows met a somewhat improved trade at prices up to £l5 15s. Sheep, a short supply. Down tegs to 655, smaller crossbred tegs to 54s 6d, and lightweights to 455. Pigs met a very firm trade. Fat sows made up to £9, mediumweight bacon pigs to £6, large porkers to 925, mediumweight porkers to 78s each, and smaller porkers to 66s apiece.. Calves were a short supply. Recent prices were maintained.

SLOUGH (Messrs. Buckland and Sons): This firm had a good supply of fat cattle at their market on Tuesday, for which there was a good trade,

heifers selling up to £lB ss, bullocks to £23, being at the rate of from 355. to 39s 6d per five cwt. A large number of fat calves made from £2 10s to £5 17s 6d, suckling and weaning calves 13s to 365. Fat sheep scarce; made up to 52s per head. Porkers made from 35s to 755; hogs up to £ll, and fat sows £5 to £7 12s 6d. Poultry were scarce; there was a good, demand and many more good birds could have been sold to advantage. Cockerels made from 3s to 4s 9d, pullets 2s to 5s 3d, hens 2s to 3s 6d. ; Eggs were plentiful, with an improvement on the previous week’s prices. “Selecteds” made from Is 7d to 2s 3d, “firsts” Is 5d to Is Bd, “middles” Is 4d to Is sd, and “smalls” Is to Is Id per dozen.

THAME (Messrs. Burrows and Bradfield): A record sale at this market on Tuesday last, when there was a firm trade for all descriptions, hens making

to 4s Id, cockerels to 7s 7d; 14,500 eggs met a very steady demand at from 2s 2d to 2s 5d per score, with 1 an average of fully 2s 3d, the best browns making from 2s 6d to 2s 9d per Score Butter to Is 4d per lb., rabbits 7d to lOd each. Provided there is no further outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, Thame Market will be open next Tuesday for the sale of fat and store stock.
