CLEARING BED OF MANGAOTUKU. TEMPORARY FLOOD PROVISION. Two or three New Plymouth borough workmen have been engaged this week in clearing the bed of the Mangaotuku stream of rubbish which might cause blockage' in the event ,of flooding. Nq attempt is -being .inade -to.-deepen; aha Whole bed of th? stream. Thef expedi-f ent is purely temporary and not part of the general scheme to prevent flooding in the New Plymouth streams being drawn up by the borough engineer, Mr. C. Clarke. -r • Several loads of rubbish of all descriptions, from, tins and bottles to brambles and bicycle frames have already been carted, away, by the .workmen and thrown on. the borough dump. . •Mr. Clarke stated that the work being done in the Mangaotuku stream comprised merely the removal of rubbish from p..nts - where it had -accumulated and where the water r.puld be,-blocked if Jiiere was a sudden flood. , When .the work was completed there should be no reason why the water, even jif - it did rise to flood heights, should, not escape a good deal faster than it. did in the February flood, which caused so much damage. , •..-■■■ ■
