WENDY’S DRESSMAKERS

FOR BABY SISTER Our special request this week is for a knitted... “Red-Riding Hood’’, cape for a Wendy girl’s baby sister. It takes about seven ounces of four-ply red wool, and is knitted on number six and num-: ber ten needles. It is made in two portions which are afterwards joined together—the hood part and the cloak. Tile Hood. Start at the front, cast one hundred and twenty stitches on to the number'

ten needles, and knit one inch in gar-ter-stitch (rows of plain knitting). Then knit two stitches together all the way’ along, to reduce to sixty/and knit one inch of stocking-stitch (alternate rows' of* plain and purl). Now change to the bigger, needles, knit one row plain, and: increase the next row to ninety stitches by knitting into the front and back of every alternate stitch. Continue on these ninety stitches for seven inches, working in garter-stitch and cast off. Leave for the time being, and knit the cloak.

This is made with a garter-stitch yoke attached to a . deep strip of stockingstitch. Cast sixty stitches on to the small needles, and knit one inch plain. Change to the bigger needles, work one plain row, then increase in every fourth stitch. Work the next six rows plain, increase in every fourth stitch of the next row, and continue until the yoke is four inches deep. Now knit twice into every stitch, and continue in stocking-stitch until the cape is the required length. Cast off. Now join hood and cape. Hun a gathering-thread along the cast-off edge of the hood; pull up to fit the fop of the cape-yoke, and sew neatly together. Knit a strip with the small needles, casting on ten stitches - and working, in garter-stitch until the tie is long -enough to go round the baby’s neck and-fasten with a bow in front. Fold in halves attach the centre of the tie to the-.centre-back of the hood where it. is joined to the cape, ‘and lightly stitch it,to each side of the front opening: ' When the little garment is put on, you can tie the long ends in a bow under the baby’s chin and they will. prevent the cape, from coming off. Next week’s special request is for a smart knitted bathing-suit, with crossover strap fastening. Look out for it. ‘ ' Wendy’s Dressmaker.
