JUBILEE SPORTS

KAPONGA CHILDREN CELEBRATE. GATHERING MOST SUCCESSFUL. Jubilee sports celebrations held at Kaponga yesterday afternoon were a success from every angle. The weather was all that could be desired and about 350 children were catered for by an energetic committee with Mr. R. A. Law as marshal and Mr. A. W. Anderson as secretary. The children assembled at the post office and were marched to Victoria Park, Piper L. Lines heading the procession. Before the commencement they were assembled at the grandstand, where Mr. Law briefly addressed the gathering on the importance of the event which they 'were, celebrating. The following distinctive letters are used to denote the schools taking part: Kaponga Public (K), Kaponga Convent (C), Riverlea (RD, Rowan (RO), Mangatoki (M). Points scored were: Kaponga 91, Mangatoki 63, Kaponga Convent 57, Riverlea 39 and Rowan 15. In addition to a bag of sweets as they entered the park gates each child taking part in the races was given a prize. At the conclusion of the sports, which were concluded to time-table, the children were entertained at a picture screening in the town hall. There was a fair attendance of parents at the sports. A bonfire and fireworks display opposite the town hall at night was largely attended. The display was supervised by Superintendent A. Melville and members of the Kaponga volunteer fire brigade. OKAIAWA DISTRICT NEWS. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. The third of a series of euchre and dance parties organised by the Okaiawa Football Club was held in the hall on Tuesday night. Prizes were won by Miss D. Robertson 1, Mrs. W. Johnston 2; Mr. B. Walsh 1, Mr. W. Blair 2. Mrs. Johnston subsequently gave her prize back to the committee. Supper was served by the committee. A short aance was held after the euchre, Miss Mabel Guy (Matapu) playing the music. Mr and Mrs. 0. Elmers and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. H. Elmers and son, Hamilton, were the guests of Mrs. Retter during the week-end. Miss B. Better is spending a holiday at Hamilton. Through the horse he was riding falling, Mr. Simon Lean, a farmer, Tempsky Road, Okaiawa. on Tuesday suffered a broken ankle. The injured man was later removed to the Hawera Hospital by ambulance. Mr. J. Graham left on Tuesday for Invercargill to attend the funeral of his mother. Miss D. Corbett has left for Auckland to attend the capping ceremony at Auckland University College.
