MEAT NEGOTIATIONS DEADLOCK WITH BRITAIN MR. RUNCIMAN’S ATTITUDE AUSTRALIAN HOPE WANES NO MEETING ARRANGED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. <. London, May 8. The meat negotiations are. threatened with failure unless the British attitude is quickly modified, the Australian Press Association reports. No further meeting of Ministers has been arranged, as in the present situation discussion would be pointless unless either side retreats from the present position regarding a long-term agreement. Obstacle after obstacle confronts, the delegation, the main issues being the fact that Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, negotiated the Argentine Treaty, which tends to make him implacable towards the Dominions seeking a modification of that treaty. Mr. J. H. Thomas, Dominions Secretary, is clearly unwilling to concede much, while Mr. W. E. Elliot’s views are so intertwined with the political ramifications of his policy that there is little hope even in that rationalistic quarter. Indeed, the Australians feel that there is little prospect of a new deal for Commonwealth exborts , pending a reconstruction of the British Cabinet. STRAIN ON LOYALTY REGULATION BY STATE Rec. 10.10 p.m. Brisbane, May 9. Mr. J. B. Brigden, director of the Bureau of Industry, in the course of an address said there were doubts whether it would be possible for the British Empire to hold together if it indulged too much in Government regulation. There was the prospect of complete unification or the breaking up of the Federal system in Australia.Whether too many Ottawa agreements would break the Empire was, another question. They imposed a great strain on the loyalty of one section of the Empire to another.
