STATUS OF CONSULS

NO PRECEDENCE IN AUSTRALIA. REPLY TO MELBOURNE REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Ret. 10.30 p.m. Canberra, May 9. The Minister of External Affairs, Sir George Pearce, stated that the refusal to grant consuls in Australia the right of private entree at levees was not discourtesy. He added that consuls in Australia had no diplomatic status nor were they given special precedence over local officials at public events. Sir George was referring to the report that members of the Victorian consular corps did not attend the King’s jubilee levee held at Government House, Melbourne, their reason being that they were slighted by the treatment received on the. occasion of the visit of the Duke of Gloucester, when they had to fight their way into a levee and take the last place in the rank of precedence, such treatment being a breach of international courtesy.
