MORALS OF WOMEN
REPORT OF LEAGUE COMMITTEE. RUSSIAN COMMUNITY INCENSED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec, 7 p.m. Shanghai, May 9. The Russian community at Shanghai is incensed at a League of Nations report which states that of 10,000 Russian women at Shanghai, of whom 7200 are between the ages of 16 and 45, at least 22$ per cent, of the latter are women of ill fame. Further fuel is added to the fire by the statement made by Father Robert, head of the Catholic missions in China? before the League of Nations Committee that of 20,000 Russian women residing in his territory 3000 to 6000 were prostitutes.
Various Russian societies at Shanghai, Tientsin, Harbin and Mukden are sending a joint protest to the League, denying what they say is a wholesale slander, and declaring that while „ Russian emigres had their full share o£ misfortunes the majority of the women stoically resisted immoral means of livelihood.
