MAYORALTIES CONTESTS ELECTIONS IN MOST PLACES. KEEN INTEREST IN THE CITIES. THE NOMINATIONS RECEIVED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. Press Association messages report nominations in other centres as follows: Wanganui: Nominations for the Wanganui mayoralty have been received from Messrs. W. M. Falconer and W. J. Rogers. There are 24 nominations for 12 seats on the Council.
Palmerston North: The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Mansford, is unopposed. There are 14 candidates for nine council seats, seven for four council seats on the Hospital Board and four candidates for two district seats on the Wellington Harbour Board. Blenheim: There are elections in Spring Creek, Omaka and Wairau ridings. Tar-sealing of highways is the question at issue. In the Wairau River Board election’s are necessary in. the Omaka and Spring Creek subdivisions. In the Awatere county, Flaxbourne and East Coast riding members are returned unopposed, but there are contests for Upper Awatere ridings arising out of local feeling over the Seddon water scheme. Elections are unnecessary in most cases for representation on the Hospital Board, Power Board and other subsidiary bodies. Timaru: Four candidates have been nominated for the mayoralty—Messrs. T. W. Satterthwaite (sitting Mayor), A. M. Patterson, G. T. Koller and G. Benstead. Seventeen candidates have been nominated for nine seats on the council, six for three seats on the Hospital Board, five for three seats on the Power Board and five for three seats on the Harbour Board.
Dunedin: The Rev. E. T. Cox, present Mayor, Mr. J. J. Marlow, city councillor, and Mr. R. S. Black, ex-Mayor, have been nominated for the city mayoralty. For twelve seats on the council 31 have been nominated, including full tickets by the Citizens’ Association and the Labour Party. Dannevirke: The Mayoral nominations are Messrs.- E. Gibbard and S. McNab. The present Mayor, Mr. M. D. Smith, is retiring. Eleven nominations have been received for nine council seats.
Whangatei: " Mr. W. Jones, fitting Mayor, was returned unopposed;
Auckland: There are three candidates for the Auckland city mayoralty, Messrs. Ernest Davis, Joseph Sayegh and A. J, Stallworthy, M.P. It was earlier stated that Mr. H. G. R. Mason had. been nominated, which was a surprise, as Mr. Sayegh was chosen some weeks ago .as the official Labour candidate. Later Mr. Mason’s name was withdrawn. For the city council (21 seats) there are 58 candidates, including full Citizens’ and Labour tickets and three Communists. There are 28 candidates for six city seats on the Transport Board. There will be contests in most suburbs, but in One Tree Hill borough the Mayor, Mr. I. J. Gbldstine, and the entire council are again unopposed, both for the second time in succession. Mr. R. Ferner is unopposed as Mayor of Mt. Albert. Wellington: Nominations for the Wellington mayoralty are: Messrs. T. C. A. Hislop (sitting), and R. Semple, M.P. There are 32 for 15 seats on the council, 27 for 13 seats on the Hospital Board and eight for four seats on the Harbour Board. Hamilton: Nominations for the Hamilton mayoralty have been received from Messrs. John Robert Fow (present Mayor), Charles Lafferty and Thomas Parker. There are 22 nominations for 12 seats on the council..
Nelson: Mr. G. L. Page and Dr. H. E. A. Washbourn have been nominated for the mayoralty. There are 17 candidates for 9 city council seats. Feilding: Mr. Thomas Collins has been elected Mayor, Mr. W. E. Carthew to the Foxton Harbour Board and Mr. P. G. Guy to the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, all unopposed. Mr. Guy is opposing the sitting representative, Mr. V. E. Smith, on the Palmerston North Hospital Board. There are 16 candidates for 9 vacancies on the borough council.
