AMERICA’S NAVY LARGER ANNUAL VOTE RECOMMENDATION MADE FOLLY OF DISARMAMENT THREAT OF WAR CLOUDS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 7.20 p.m. Washington, April 23. The House of Representatives Appropriations Committee offered recommendations to-day that £91,555,000 be spent on the United States naval establishment in the next fiscal year, rising to a steady annual naval expenditure of £111,000,000 after 1941, when the Washington Treaty navy will be in operation. The heavy cost of building the navy up to treaty strength was laid to the “folly and futility” of the course pursued by the United States following the Washington Treaty in 1922, after which until 1930 the United States laid down only 21 vessels, while Britain laid down 86 and Japan laid down. 125. The committee, however, proposed a reduction in the expenditure for new building by half of that, proposed by the Administration in the belief that some international agreement for tonnage limitation is still possible. Nevertheless £42,000,000 will be available for ship construction in 1936. Mr. Glover H. Cary, chairman of the sub-committee of naval appropriations, defended the report from the floor of the House. “In view of world conditions, with war clouds hanging over Europe, with every important nation expanding its military and naval forces and building the greatest war machine ever been built,” he said, “it is necessary for us to take this note and so prepare ourselves that we may be able to defend this fair land of ours in case an emergency arises.”
NAVAL CONVERSATIONS . . .7 ANGLO-GERMAN EXPERTS TYPE AND SIZE OF SHIPS By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. London, April 24. Preliminary Anglo-German naval conversations will occur at London in May between the respective naval experts, who will discuss types and sizes of ships. The discussions in no way arise from the German demand for a navy at least 35 per cent, of the size of Britain’s, but are a prelude to the five-Power conference later in the year.
