STEEPLECHASE SEASON
HAWERA TRACK NOTES EGMONT CLUB’S MEETING. HUGE ENTRY IN JUBILEE GUP.
(By
“Limited.”)
The splendid nominations received for the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting is a good augury for the success of the fixture which promises to be the best held by the club for some seasons. Entries show a substantial increase. An outstanding feature is the number of horses nominated for the King’s Jubilee Cup, no fewer than 43 being listed. As the safety limit of starters from the point of dispatch in this race is 18, the club may be faced with the position of a two-division race. The meeting,' which practically opens the steeplechase season in the North Island, has been the means of introducing steeplechasers who have made names for themselves in more important events over the big fences at the Great Northern, Wellington and Grand National meetings. This year’s steeplechase field contains a number of promising jumpers headed by Tudor, who so far this season has been unlucky. The local horse Copey is in great form and as gay as a two-year-old. His condition is a credit to Owner-Trainer Fryer, who has Copey built up .to stand. a strenuous season, and the outlook for him' appears distinctly promising. Chile, Pahu, Invictus, Capella Abbey, Cotsfield, Transact and Taura Lad are all capable jumpers, and , this year's Egmont steeplechase . promises a stirring contest. A big contingent of horses from the Auckland-. province is expected and the meeting should.be a. thoroughly representative one from all parts of the North Island. '. ... ; ... The full steeplechase course will be available to-morrow and schooling work will be watched with interest. . . On account of showing slight stiffness Ruri was not taken to Feilding,. Trainer
Fryer preferring to reserve him for the Hawera meeting. Ruri worked a couple of rounds on the sand on Thursday morning quite soundly, and will be fancied for the Mcßae Memorial Handicap, which he was successful in winning last yeir. Onewhetu ran his usual honest races at Feilding, being in a place each day. This gelding has had a lot of racing but stands up to his work in good style. Colossal, whd has had an easy time since racing, resumed track work this morning looking bright and well. Carfex has quite recovered from his recent strain and is galloping in his usual brilliant style. Autumn Leaf on pulling up after his race at Feilding the first day was found to be suffering from a bruised heel, and he missed an outing on the second day. Ingenuity returned as far as Marton, where she is engaged to race on Saturday.
WAITAUNAHA IN GREAT ORDER. i B. La Pouple has Gold Gleam and old s Waitaunaha in capital order. Waitauna- : ha is to race on the second day at Hawera in the steeplechase. The old fellow ; is in great heart and gave a dashing exi hibition recently over a round of the ■ schooling hurdles, out-jumping his rival i Ruaform at each obstacle. • Golden Hair has not been asked to ■ do any fast work lately, but has been . bowling along at good pace work and will probably be speeded up to-morrow. i Similar work has been apportioned Friesland. Two maidens that will attract attention on their debut are the three-year-old by Colossus—Lady Egletine and the two-year-old by Acre—Rapt. Both are under the care of R., Brough and have been given plenty of time. The first-men-tioned has shown speed and the Acre youngster has come on a lot recently, j. Mr. C. H. Washer’s promising steeplechaser Cynical Kid is still spelling, having been removed' to his owner’s place. Mr. Washer is to be condoned with on the loss of the services of his horse for Hawera and . other immediate meetings. A full brother, to Cynical Kid was recently disposed of by Mr.' Washer to a northern • sportsman. -Mr; F. S. Easton’s Fairfax, who disappointed again at Auckland by refusing to leave the barrier, has been taken out of training for the present and returned to her owner at Foxton, where she will be hacked about. Trainer J. Brown returned from Auckland this morning and expresses his appreciation of the consideration shown him with Fairfax by the officials, being allowed to have the filly led., round to the start and placed in the hands of the assistant starter. ! J. Fryer has Supreme Court attending the tracks doing easy exercise! . : Green Linnet has been brought in and will be starting work in a few days. The following trainers have already definitely booked in for the Hawera meeting with teams as follows:— . ! M. Carroll, Hamilton: Boughal, Orac, Lionheart and Sirdna, !R. C. HindS, Te Aroha: King Win, King Meitdr and King Briefly. ! W., J. Wood, Hawke’s Bay: Arctic King and Arctic Stat. I A. E. Cox, Te Aroha: Queen Nona and Keith Lu., ■ W. Pine, Palmerston North: Full Throttle, Evasion, Note Issue. C. Pritchard, Trentham: Pahu. ; C. E. Twist, Hawke’s Bay: CulluS and Dozie. 1 W.: Jorgenson, Feilding: Headland. STEEPLECHASE SCHOOLING. ■ Interesting work was performed yesterday by horses engaged at the Egmont Club’s meeting. The Outside of the course proper was available for fast work. On s account of heavy rain it was slow but provided excellent galloping ground.
The feature of the morning’s work was the schooling of Copey and March Alone over the big fences. Best gallops on the fiat were recorded by Carfex and Gold Gleam. Passing Fancy showed ability to handle soft going. Ruri (Duncan) and Haunui (Sheild) were the only horses galloped before breakfast and were sent over five furlongs. The pair finished together with Ruri going the better in Im 10s. Ruri worked without shewing any signs of soreness.
After breakfast St. Clara (Cook) worked pleasingly in her pace work on the sand.
Passing Fancy (Cole) galloped four furlongs comfortably in 565. Aga Khan (Edgecombe) was given a working gallop ever a mile without trying time. New Leaf (Cole) completed his half mile in 57s on his own, a lazy worker* 1 he invariably does better in company. Colossal (Grindlay) did useful work on the inside oval. Golden Hair (Grylls) and Carfex (Cole) conceded Friesland (Monkley) a good start at the five furlongs disc, and in a smart gallop Friesland finished a length in front of Carfex with Golden Hair three lengths back in Im 7s. : A good gallop over a mile was performed by Ruaform (Conway) and Waitaunaha (Cook) with Ruaform a shade in front at the finish. Harvest Moon (Grindlay) did a round of solid pace work on the sand. Gold Gleam (Cole) went very attractively in his effort over four furlongs in 53Js. Silver Wings (Cook) took 55s for half a mile and evidently this mare is not at her best. Autumn Leaf was out doing light work on the inside. Panloff and Just Off were given steady work. .Royal Dispute (Dofnbroski), the Acre— Rapt two-year-old and the ColossusLady Egletine three-year-old were started from the barrier at the five furlongs, going out’well at the first attempt. Lined up again the Acre youngster shot out smartly from Royal Dispute with the three-year-old left a couple of lengths. Royal Dispute failed to make the turn correctly, and the Acre youngster finished well in front with the three-year-old pulled up in Im 13s.
STANCHION SHOWS HESITANCY. Stanchion ridden by Chote did a round of the schooling hurdles, getting round safely but displaying hesitancy. Copey (Cook) and March Alone (Grindlay)’ started off over the steeplechase course, taking the brush double safely. Both negotiated the brush at the back and the post and rails with Copey doing much ■ the better at ■ the jumps. March Alone got into the sod wall heavily but both cleared the hencoop in good style. At the first of the double brush March Alonfe crashed heavily, but Copey cleared the final obstacles splendidly. March Alone Ifijured his chest and leg and can. be written off for the forthcoming meeting. W. Grindlay, although getting a heavy fall, escaped injury.' . •- Harvest Moon as a result of his knock at Feilding is being sent to Foxton for saltwater treatment and will be an absentee from the Hawera meeting. GREYMOUTH POSTPONEMENT. rain Makes races impossible. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Greymouth, April 24. Owing to rain the Greymouth Jockey Club’s rates were postponed till Friday.
