COUNCIL NOMINEES

NEW PLYMOUTH DEPUTATION. MR.'J. DARBY TO BE NOMINATED. Deputations representing all sections of the community waited on three New Plymouth men, Messrs. J. Darby, H. V. S. Griffiths and T. P. Anderson, on Thursday with a request that they consent to nomination as candidates for the New Plymouth Borough Council. Mr. Darby, a present councillor, consented, Mr. Griffiths, formerly Mayor of the town, could not give a definite answer at present, and Mr. Anderson, wjio has just concluded two terms as a councillor, said he could not reconsider his decision to retire; >

The ’ deputation to Mr. Darby referred to his work on the electric light committee. His services would be valuable if he were again elected. Mr. C. Hannan added that although it would probably entail a sacrifice. on Mr. Darby’s part if he stpod again he felt good men were needed and would not like to see anything stand in Mr. Darby’s way.'Reference was’made by a deputation to Mr.” Griffiths’ intimate knowledge of borough affairs, as he has served previously both as a councillor' and as Mayor. He had given valued service over a long period of years, and the deputation expressed the hope that he would consent to nomination and once more take an active part in the administration of the affairs of the borough. Mr. Griffiths said that, although approached by many people on the matter, he was definitely not standing for election as Mayor. He . would, he added, be giving his support to Mr. R. W. D. Robertson, a colleague on the council for many years, whom he was sure would, if elected, fill the position of Mayor with credit to himself and honour to the town.

The deputation to Mr. Anderson asked him to reconsider a previous decision not to stand again, referring to his excellent work as a council nominee on the New Plymouth Airport Board. Mr. Anderson said he could not possibly change his decision for private reasons which would prevent him from giving the time to the position of councillor that 'he felt it deserved.
