THE VACANT ROLE

OLIVER CROMWELL ON SCREEN. The question of a screen Oliver Cromwell is agitating Julius Hagen, who—as head of the Twickenham Studios—has £200,000 worth of contracts to fulfil during 1935, including an ambitious picture with Oliver Cromwell as the central figure. If Charles Laughton were available, there would probably be no further search; but Mr. Laughton is under contract to a rival company for months to come. Sir. Cedric Hardwicke (soon to be seen in the British Dominions productions “Nell Gwyn” and “The King of Paris”), Leslie Banks, and Edward Chapman are other names suggested for the part., GIFT OF CROSS-EYED KITTENS. Two Siamese kittens have travelled across the North American continent to join the household of Glenda Farrell, star of “Heat and Lightning,” the attraction showing at King’s Theatre, Stratford, on Friday only. When Miss. Farrell found the two! kittens, still a bit groggy from their 3,500-mile journey, but otherwise ready to go places and do things, both of them proved to be cross-eyed. They were presents from Robert Riskin, screen playwright. Glenda named her pete “Risky” and “Whisky” and took them to the studio, where they were enthusiastically admired. ONE OF THESE MODERN GIRLS. A new favourite and a new name comes to the screen in “Anne of Green Gables,” a coming attraction at the Opera House, Hawera. Anne Shirley is: the heroine in the film, played by Anne Shirley. The name was adopted by the actress when she won the role that hundreds of other Hollywood girls had sought. Formerly known ‘as Dawn O’Day, the new Anne Shirley is 16 years old. Despite her youth she is a screen veteran, having made her debut before the cameras at the age of three. She Itas since supported herself and her mother from her motion picture earnings.
