E. KIRKBY CHAMPION
FINE RUNNING BY BOYS HIGH SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE. RESULTS OF THE EVENTS. E. Kirkby won the senior steeplechase championship of the Hawera Technical High School when the events were held on Thursday. More than 180 competitors took part in five events and there was a large attendance at< the finishing post. Kirkby has proved himself an outstanding distance runner at the school this year having established records in the mile’ and half-mile, as well as demonstrating outstanding ability in the fourmiles steeplechase. . The junior championship was won by J. Sheerin, who came in nearly a minute ahead of the second man in very good time. The junior handicap was won by JVL. Woods and the senior by D. Archbold, while the under 14 handicap was won by A. Bernard by a good margin. As part of the excellent organisation the juniors were dispatched promptly at 2 o’clock from the school. The course for the juniors led along Camberwell Road and Vogel Street to South Road, which was traversed as far as Mr. J. Greenhill’s house, where a cross-country route led to Waihi Road and the finishing line opposite the stand in King Edward Park. The senior course branched off the South Road at Denby Road, coming back to Mr. A. Hunter’s property for the run home. Kirkby gave a very good demonstration of running and was unpaced much of the way. He finished tirelessly and could probably have reduced the time considerably.
Officials responsible for the organisation included the principal, Mr. J. Dash, and his staff, comixrising Messrs. W. W. Thomas, H. G. Whitehead, J. C. Findlater, A. Tugwell, W. Thompson, H. Ackroyd, and Misses M. Smyth, R. Duff, B. Earle and Britland. Results were:—
