INGLEWOOD SCHOOL
PLAYING AREA IMPROVEMENTS.
FINANCIAL .ASSISTANCE ASKED. The full facts regarding ground improvements at the Inglewood school and the necessity for metalling the roadway to the school are to be placed before the Education Department by the Taranaki board and a grant will be asked for to pay the balance of a debt incurred by the committee for the. improvements. The department will also be asked to make a grant for the metalling of the road. This course was decided on by the board yesterday after it had heard a deputation from the Inglewood school committee. The school area at Inglewood was about 10 acres of undulating land, it was stated. The committee had done considerable work raising funds and levelling the grounds, the undulating nature of which made it very necessary to remove' all depressions' capable of holding water. Otherwise the ground would not be in n Suitable Condition for the children during the winter. Through hard work and considerable expenditure the committee had made a great improvement, it was stated, but having paid a large amount of money, the ' committee now found itself faced ■ with a small outstanding debt that had : !’to be met immediately. The board was ’asked to grant the committee assistance with the payment of the debt The school received only £22 in c&pit&tion ■ and of this £lB was required for the cleaning of the school. The board was asked to make a gift but if it could , not agree ■to that the committee sought its help in the form of a loan. The committee was about to embark on a carnival to raise funds and would bo prepared to repay the board. .Members of the board who , had attended the opening of the school would appreciate the work done. Another matter that needed the attention of the board was the metalling of the roadway to the school, said the deputation. It was estimated that this work would cost £35. The metalling of the road appeared to be a case for the department, said the chairman, Mr. W. H. Jones. The funds of the board were rather limited as far as the making of special grants was concerned. The board was favourable to such a request, however, and would do its best to meet the committee, Dr. W. M. Thomson was of the opinion that the nature of the requests made it appropriate to ask the department for a grant. - Mr. Jones thought a good case could be made out for the metalling, but the question of the outstanding debt was much more difficult. The school committee was a very fine one and he thought it deserved every consideration. He suggested the position should be outlined to the department. Dr. Thomson urged the board to make every effort to secure a grant to facilitate the payment of the debt.
