ACTIVITIES AT NEW PLYMOUTH. REPORTS from DEPARTMENTS. The last meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board before the elections was held yesterday. Present were Messrs. P. E. Stainton (chairman), S. Vickers, A. Corkill, H. E. Blyde, J. Young, J. Brennan, E. B. Davies, J. Gibbs, R. J. Deare, C. H. Barnitt and E. R. C. Gilmour. The superintendent, Dr. G. F. Rich, reported the following figures for the month, the returns for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: Patients, admitted 224 (181), discharged 222 (168), died 9 (9), remaining 174 .(137), highest number for one day 196 (148), daily average 181.61 (137.33), operations 165 (144). Two cases of scarlet fever were admitted to the isolation block and one of typhoid fever. The bacteriologist, Mr. V. J. Hawke, reported that «j 8 tests were made, the total last Marcn being 728. Of last month’s tests 484 were for the New Plymouth hospital, 30 for the Hawera hospital, 15 for the Stratford hospital and 139 for private practitioners. s The farm accounts showed a credit balance of £353 15s 9d. The coal consumption for the month was 91.45 tons, reported the engineer, Mr. J. H. Mander. The twin rapid press was put into service on March 7 and had run satisfactorily. The radiologist, Dr. C. E. Costello, reported as follows: Examinations for diagnostic unit 262 (233), skiagrams for diagnostic unit 507 (556), treatments'los (134), time taken for treatments 43h 59m (54h 27m). The masseuse, Miss E. Rutledge, reported: In-patients 43 (44), out-patients 26 (32), treatments 782 (758). Details for the 12 months from April 1, 1934, to March 31, 1935, were: Inpatients 303 (348), out-patients 212 (237), treatments 9457 (10,021). The general manager, Mr. E. Holden, reported that renovations to ward 2 were nearing completion and that preparations were in hand for the transfer of ward 1 patients to ward 2. The matron of the Rangiatea home, Mrs. E. O. Grant, reported that two men and one woman were admitted during the month. Two men and one woman had left. There were two deaths, leaving 27 men and seven women in the home at the end of the month. Gifts acknowledged were; Easy rocking-chair, Mr. Hollard, Fulford Street, New Plymouth; vegetables, fruit, flowers, Baptist Church harvest festival; bread, etc., Hygeinic Bakery; books, Mr- and Mrs. Nuns, Mrs. Brumby; flowers, Mr. Bennett. The New Plymouth Child Welfare Committee, at the conclusion of the first year of its activities, asked for the appointment of a board representative on the committee. The chairman was appointed to act on the committee. The names of Misses E. C. Wood (Opotiki), N. C. Adams (Paeroa), M. HA Wright (Te Kuiti), P.JL Winks (Wanganui), D. M. Woodhead (Wellington) and L. J. Watts (Dunedin) were added to the waiting list for probationers.
