VERSANT’S BEST EFFORT SEVERAL FINE PERFORMANCES. KELLY AND KILTOWYN WELL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, April 16.. Conditions were ideal for the semifinal gallops at Ellerslie this morning and there was a fair amount of interesting work. The course proper, with the poles 60 feet out, was available, and No. 3 grass was also open, but was in little demand. The going, although inclined to cut out slightly, was excellent. Among the best efforts of the morning were those of Versant, Kelly, Kiltowyn, King Musk, Tai Yang, Mesurina and Psychologist. On the course proper Fleetwind and Valise were' well in front of Prival after five furlongs in lrn. Bs. The best effort of the morning over half a mile was credited to Versant in 50 3-ss. It was a good gallop, as he carried a solid weight. . Kelly had Gay Broney as a companion over seven furlongs, the. first four being covered in 50 l-ss. and the full distance in Im. 31 l-ss. Kelly drew away a furlong from home and was about four lengths ahead at the finish. His effort was a good one, though he had about 2j stone the better of the weights. Impasto was just in front of Gay Marigold, with Caliente handy, after a similar task, which took Im. 32 2-ss. The first-riamed pair were running on solidly. , Tybalt finished in front of Royal Appellant and Teddy Boy after five furlongs in Im. 6 4-ss. The first two took 25 2-ss. Korokio and Imamint were associated over six furlongs. The first three were covered in 39 l-ss. and the full distance in Im. 20 2-ss. Korokio worked her best since arriving here some weeks ago. Imamint also pleased. After; running his first two furlongs in 26 2-ssi Psychologist was timed to complete the five furlongs in Im.. 6 3-55., dding it well at the end. KING MUSK AND SCOTLAND. King Musk was in front of Scotland, with Jewelled Girdle two lengths away after seven furlongs run in Im. 31 4-ss. This was a good effort, as they went from almost a stand and ran the first three furlongs in 38 3-ss. Kiltbwyn,, who followed them, was timed to run the same distance in similar time. He covered the first half-mile in 50 2-ss. and was staying on solidly. The two-year-olds Tai Yang and Brilliant Acre jumped away together at the five furlong post and, after running the first two in 24 2-55., came home in Im. 6 3-55.. Tai Yang drew away in the straight and finished about three lengths ahead. Mesurina, after running two furlongs in 25 4-55., was staying on very solidly to complete five furlongs in Im. 6 2-ss. Karangapai and Cornerman cleared two hurdles safely and Karangapai later jumped the same fences alone, giving a good exhibition. Billy Boy pleased better than Master Musk over six hurdles. Verden was sent over the same fences and got through his task well. He afterwards ran seven furlongs on the course proper in Im. 40 4-ss. \ Wee. Pat outjumped Kilmuir over four hurdles, fier display being first-class. The arrivals , this morning ' included Diatomous, Chalice, Rereatu, Tudor, Red Manfred, Plato, Coronilla and Haute Monde. The middle grass track, with poles about Bft. out, was used for fast work at Takanini, and the going was excellent. ' ■ Greek Gold and Nun Nicer ran a'mile in Im. $3 3-55., after covering the first half-mile in 50s. Nun Nicer was half a length in front, but both were stopping at the end. Flood Tide was several lengths in front of Matorni after five furlongs in Im. 1 3-ss. Dark Marble w&s given pace work on the dirt track. He was sore before and after working, but it is intended, if possible, to start him in the Brighton Hurdles, in which he is to be ridden by J. Burgess. Gay Sheik ran six furlongs in lm. 225., working very freely.
