FAIRFAX’S GALLOP
FAST HALF-MILE RUN AT HAWERA CARFEX’S RETURN TO TRACK.
“Limited.”)
(By '
There was glorious weather yesterday for training operations at Hawera, atmospheric conditions being perfect. The trial grass and plough tracks were in good order, though not at their fastest. A feature of the morning’s work was the gallop of Fairfax over half a mile. Ridden by G. Duncan, Fairfax gave R. Brough’s Acre—Rapt two-year-old (Chote) three lengths start and'beat him easily at the finish by four lengths in 4915. The gallop was performed on the trial grass and was impressive? Fairfax went from the barrier yesterday morning without any bother, and when she leaves decently in a'race is going to take a lot of beating. She left by train for Auckland to-day. Carfex (Hawk), who has been off serious work for some time, after pottering about for a few days, signalised his return to fast work by sprinting half a mile on the grass in 51s. Carfex looks as well as ever and is to run at the Hawera meeting all going well. Silver Wings (Grylls) and R. Brough’s Colossal—Lady Egietine youngster galloped five furlongs on the plough, finishing with\ little between them in lm. 6 l-ss. On the grass Autumn Leaf (Sheild) sprinted three furlongs in 38s. Ruaform (Conway) hit out solidly in his pace exercise over two rounds. On the plough Gold Gleam (Cook) did half a mile in 52 2-ss.-On the same track Aga Khan (Sheild), going by himself, worked a mile comfortably in lm. 4745. Waitaunaha (Cook), after pacing a round, did a second lap at a solid steeplechase pace. Ingenuity (Conway) worked at half pace. St. Clara has apparently made a good recovery and has been nominated for. the open distance events at the Hawera fixture. Ridden for the first time since resuming work, St. Clara shaped satisfactorily.' Diagano (Conway), after crashing through the wing at the first fence, completed a round of five fences. The usual number of youngsters were given routirie exercise. J. Fryer has accepted for Feilding with Ruri in the hope that he will. be able to race him. He is under treatment for skin abrasions.
