SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE. LOWER GRADUATE HONOURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, March 29. The following scholarships were awarded by the council of Victoria University College last night:— Sir Robert Stout Scholarship: C. M. P. Brown. James Macintosh Scholarship (travelling scholarship of £250 for two years): A. E. Fieldhouse, M.A. Dip. Ed. Local Scholarship of £100: G. Halliday, B.A. Jacob Joseph Scholarships: H. Rosen (law), D, E. Andrews (chemistry), Mary M. M. Boyd (zoology). Congratulations were extended by his fellow members to Mr. H. F. O’Leary on his recent election as president of the New Zealand Law Society. In returning thanks Mr. O’Leary said his appointment gave him pleasure, first because he was a graduate of Victoria College, and apparently the first graduate to become president of the New Zealand Law Society; secondly he had received the good wishes of the chairman of the council, Mr. P. Levi, in whose office he had commenced his legal career in 1903. Students attending the college to date this year number 1528, against 1775 last year. Details of the principal classes are as follow, last year’s figures being given in parentheses: Economics, 146 (97); English. 93 (93); chemistry, 88 (98); physics, 81 (82); French. 74 (99); Latin, 72 (66); history, 66 (85).
