MR. J. L. WALTON FAREWELLED. MANY TRIBUTES TO HIS WORK. The esteem in which Mr. J. L. Walton, accountant at the New Plymouth post office, has always been held was well demonstrated by the muster of departmental officers at a farewell on the eve of his retirement last night. All branches were represented aqd many tributes were paid to Mr. Walton. The chief postmaster, Mr. R. G. May, expressed his gratification at the attendance which, he felt, showed the great respect in which Mr. Walton was held. Mr. Walton had proved himself to be the essence of a gentleman and at the same time a most capable departmental officer. He was sure Mr. Walton was leaving with mixed feelings, sorry to leave his work and the staff, but happy that he would be able to enjoy the fruits of his 41 years’ work. Letters that had been received from all over the province gave further evidence of the retiring officer’s efficiency and popularity. He assured Mr. Walton that he Would be missed. Mr. May presented Mr. Walton with two fireside chairs.

Messrs. J. W. Logan (telegraph), D. Donaldson (engineering), C. W. Me- • Given, H. N. Seldon, L. Fields (money order), L. H. Honeyfield (counter), C. N. McEachern (mail room) and N. Mclntyre . (clerical) added their tributes to Mr. Walton’s sterling worth. Mr. Walton expressed his appreciation of the gifts and tfie speakers’ remarks. His association with the New Plymouth post office had always been happy, he said, and this had been made possible by the loyal and hearty co-operation that he had always received from the staff. He would still take an interest in the work of the office, and he hoped he would retain the friendships he had made. He thanked the women members of the staff for the bouquet that had been presented to Mrs. Walton.
