PLUNKET SOCIETY FUNDS
EUCHRE PARTY AT RAHOTU. A euchre party for the funds of the Plunket Society was held at Rahotu. There was a good attendance. Supper was provided by members of the society. Prizes were won by Mrs. H. Clarke and Mrs. R. Morgan and Mr. C. Pepperill junr. and Mr. H. Waswo playing off with Mr. J. Millian for the men’s second prize. The death of Dr. D. Blackley will be felt by his old patients at Rahotu. For about 30 years he visited the district on alternate sale days, many seeing him then, as a friend as well as medical adviser. Personal Items. Mr. and Mrs. T. P.' Hughson senr. have retruned from Auckland looking well. They will sail for Great Britain next month. Miss Robertson is staying with her sister, Mrs. Alex Baker. Miss Reynolds has returned to her home after a visit to Mrs. C. Penwarden. Mr. W. R. Wright is visiting the Waitangi district. Mr. G. Gibson and his son, Mr. Alex Gibson, have returned from Whakatane, where they purchased a farm-- of 100 acres. - Mr. Gibson has received cabled advice of the death of his sister, who returned to England about five years ago, and has been very ill since then. Mrs. W. Buttler has been reappointed president of the basketball club and Miss W. Murray secretary. FASHION PARADE AT ELTHAM. PLUNKET SOCIETY AFTERNOON. The Eltham Plunket Society held a successful afternoon in the Eltham town hall on Wednesday in the form of a concert and mannequin parade- Afternoon tea was served by members of the committee under the direction of Mr. John Campbell and Mrs. A, Mcpherson.. Items were given by Mrs. J. A- Rankin and Misses P. Spencer, N. Fake, M- Lawrence and Joy Campbell, The mannequin parade was arranged by J. H. Morton and the following showed the gowns: Mesdames A. J. Mcpherson., J. Davies, M. Hutchinson, J, Falkinder, Darcy Knuckey and Misses Adele Carter, Eve Mehrtens, Jessie Penhall, Nola Burrows, Mabel Carter, Paddy Stewart and Phyllis Spencer. The first group consisted of sports and spectator sports wear and showed some smart suits and ensembles for golf. Then followed afternoon' frocks and dress coats. Some were smartly cut and lavishly trimmed with novelty fur collars. The day and afternoon frocks were particularly interesting. Possibly the most showy group was the* evening and semi-evening weaf. Most were very fitting, moulding the figure and flaring from the knees, many having pleated and frilled trains. Many of the models featured silvery lame, sequin and metal bead trimmings. Taffetas were very slim fitting with full frills placed very low on the skirts and bouffant sleeve and shoulder trimmings. There was a good attendance and many visitors from Hawera, Stratford and surrounding districts were present. PLUNKET SOCIETY ADDRESS. The problems of infant and maternal welfare in New Zealand were the subject of an address by Dr. Doris Gordon to a large audience at Patea on Wednesday. Mrs. R. W. Haddow, president of the Patea Plunket Society, welcomed Dr. Gordon on the society’s behalf. ELTHAM GIFT AFTERNOON. An afternoon was given on Monday to Miss E. Peacock, who is shortly to be married- Mrs. Gubb and Mrs. Sybil Pennington were the hostesses, and there were about 80 guests. A musical programme included solos by Mrs. Rankin and Misses Jean Campbell and N. Arthur, recitations by Misses P. Spencer, N. Arthur and Doreen Pepperell and two dances by Misses M. Lawrence and Doreen Pepperell. ■Mrs. Hilmer and Mrs. Cooper won the competitions. Afternoon tea was served by girl friends of the guest of honour. An autograph album was passed round and signed for presentation to Miss Peacock. Mrs. Gubb wished Miss Peacock happiness and prosperity. Assisted by the Misses J. Peacock and R. Bullock, Miss E. Peacock opened the parcels.
