MRS. McKAY WINS SILVER BUTTON. DECIDING MATCHES AT KAPONGA. By defeating Mrs. Dawson (Kaponga) in the final at Kaponga yesterday Mrs. McKay (Hawera) won the New Zealand Croquet Council’s silver button for A grade competition. Mrs. McKay’s score was 26 to 14. The deciding matches were played on the Kaponga Croquet Club’s greens in fine weather. There was a large number of visitors. In presenting the button to Mrs. McKay Mr. J. Clegg congratulated the club on the splendid surface of the greens. He had played at Melbourne and other large centres, he said, but he had never played on truer lawns than those at Kaponga. . The results were as follows:— 1 First round: Mrs. .McKay (Hawera) beat Mrs. Long (Manaia) 26—2, Mrs. Ward (Okaiawa) beat Mrs. Harding (Hawera Park) 26—19, Mrs. Dawson (Kaponga) beat Mrs. Jenkin (Opunake) 26—2, Mrs. Glenny (Patea) a bye. Semi-final: Mrs. McKay beat Mrs. Dawson 26—14. CROQUET COMPETITIONS. KAPONGA CLUB AFTERNOON. Three competitions were held on the Kaponga Croquet Club’s lawns on Thursday afternoon, the monthly competition day. Owing to counter-attrac-tions and unsettled weather the attendance was not up to standard. The afternoon’s results were: A golf, Mesdames Brewer and Dawson equal; B golf, Mrs. Harper; ladder, Mrs. Rothe. OKAIAWA CROQUET PLAY. COUNCIL BUTTONS MATCHES. The final matches of the New Zealand Croquet Council’s B grade silver buttons were played at Okaiawa on Wednesday. Results are:— First round: Mrs. Barrow beat Mrs. Thrush 26-10. Mrs. Stevenson beat Mrs. Browning 26-19, Mrs. Evans beat Mrs. Lester 26-23. Second round: Mrs. Barrow beat Mrs. Stevenson. 26-9, Mrs. Evans won from Mrs. Peacock by. default. Final: Mrs. Barrow beat Mrs. Evans 26-7.
80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. MR. W. CORKIN, HAWERA. An evening was held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. Corkin, Egmont Street, HaWera, recently when 40 guests met. the occasion being Mr. Corkin’s 80th birtiiday. Relatives and friends from all parts were present. The Rev. J. Ings congratulated Mr. Corkin on reaching his 80th birthday. Adjutant Hawkes, of the Salvation Army, spoke of Mr. Corkin’s connection with the Army and the manner in which he worked, and thanked him for the interest he taken for so many years. Mr. L. Pinny wished Mr. and Mrs. Corkin the best of health. Mr. Corkin gave a few reminiscences of his younger days. Telegrams >nd letters were read from all parts of the Dominion. Mr. G. Corkin replied on behalf of his father. After supper a cake was cut by Mr. Corkin. Musical items were given and games' were held. Mr. P. Duggan, Mr. and Mrs. W. Foster and family, Matapu, Mrs. Oliver and daughter and Mrs. H. Wells, Hawera, were among those present. PATEA WRESTLERS’ SUCCESS. TEAM VISITS WANGANUI. Seven wins and one draw in ten contests were secured by the Patea amateur wrestling team which visited Wanganui this week. The success is all the more commendable as training has been in progress for a very short period and several of the contestants have had no other training. The contests were arranged to assist in the compilation of a programme for a tournament representative of Hawera, Patea and Wanganui amateurs for later presentation at Pater Details, Patea wrestlers being mentioned first, are:— D. Mays 5.10 beat C McFarlane 5.5. E. Reid 7.0 beat C. Roy 6.8. J. Chamberlain 7.0 beat T. Staines 6.5. C. Thompson 7.0 beat D. Anderson 7.2. I, Ansley 9.7 beat L. Northover 9.7. C. Papps 8.0 lost to E. Reeves 8.10. J. Hekaka 10.0 beat J. Davis l n .O. S. White 10.9 lost to C. Chevannes 11.2. C. Wills 12.0 beat L. Couper 12.12. G. Matson 10.6 drew with R. Jones. PERSONAL. Joining the association’s large gallery of photographs and occupying a prominent position at the head of the hall, a photograph of Mr. W. I. Arundell, New Plymouth, whose gift of £5OOO materially assisted in the rehabilitation of the association’s finances, has been, hung in the Egmont A. and P. Association’s committee room. “I hope that Mr. Arundell’s name will be honoured as long as there is a committee,” said the president, Mr. John Forbes, in paying a tribute. “His great undertaking will always be honoured,” he added. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. J. R. Corrigan was expressed by the Egmont A. and P. Association at a general committee meeting yesterday. The president, Mr. John Forbes, said Mr. Corrigan had taken a large part in the development of the association and the loss would be great. The death occurred at Hawera on Thursday of Mrs. Katie Miriam Keith, aged 52, the wife of Mr. Archibald Keith and a former well-known resident of Waitara. Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Josephs Church yesterday and the funeral took place at the Hawera cemstery. A motion of condolence with Mr. G. Court, secretary of the Kaponga Football Club, because of the death of his father was carried at the annual meeting of the club on Thursday. Congratulations to Mr. L. V. Bryant, Palmerston North, a member of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club, upon his election as a member of the Alpine Club (England), and upon his remarkable climb of the Matterhorn during his recent climbing in Switzerland, were extended at the annual meeting of the club at Hawera on Thursday night. To commemorate Mr. Rod Syme’s 100th ascent of Mount Egmont on December 9 he was presented by the president of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club, Mr. L. O. Hooker, at the annual meeting on Thursday on behalf of club members with a framed photograph of himself on the summit on the occasion of the ascent.
