MATCHES IN SOUTH TARANAKI. COUNCIL SILVER BUTTONS. A team from the Hawera Park Croquet Club visited Stratford on Tuesday, and met the Kaponga team on the Avon club’s lawns in a McL’Dowie Cup match. After a keen contest Kaponga won by eight points, details being; Mesdames W. A. Spragg and Jackson (Park) 26 v. Mesdames*Lewis and Rothery (K) 12; Mesdames Dowden and Hobbs (Park) 4 v. Mesdames Thurston and Brewer (K) 26. The semi-final, in which Manaia will play Kaponga, and the final, when Eltham will meet the winner of the semi-final, was postponed and will be held on Hawera club’s lawns on Monday. Play in the New Zealand Croquet Council’s annual silver button contest, for South Taranaki, has beep very interesting and the finals have now been reached. . . -• The B grade games' were played at Okaiawa on Wednesday, Mrs. Thrush (Okaiawa) 9, losing, to Mrs. J. E. Barrow (Park) 26; and /Mrs. Stephenson (Hawera) 10, losing to Mrs. Barrow (Park) 2G, in the semi-finals. Mrs. Barrow won the final from Mrs. Evans (Kaponga) 26—7. The C. grade games were played at Eltham, when Mrs. Dowden (Park) defeated Mrs. Maxwell (Patea). The A grade was decided at Kaponga yesterday, games resulting as follows. Mrs. Dawson (Kaponga) beat Mrs. Jenkins (Opunake); Mrs. Ward (Okaiawa), beat Mrs. J. W. Harding (Park); Mrs. J. S. McKay (Hawera), beat Mrs. E. Long (Manaia); Mrs. Dawson (Kaponga), beat Mrs. Glenny (Patea). In the final Mrs. J. S. McKay (Hawera) beat Mrs. Dawson (Kaponga). The Kaponga Croquet Club entertained the visitors io luncheon and afternoon tea, and notwithstanding the recent floods the lawns played well. At the Hawera lawns the club competitions are being played with haste owing to the break in the weather and the close of the season being near at hand. The final stages of most of the sections have beep reached, and yesterday Mesdames A. M. Winks and W. F. Buist, who were equal with 12 wins each for the Pacey rose bov/1 for handicap singles, met in a final game which after a keen contest resulted in a win for Mrs. W. F. Buist. In the championships games decided during the week resulted: Mrs. A. E. Stevens beat Mrs’ A. M. Winks, Mrs. Stevens beat Mrs. R. Wylie; Mrs. Bull won by default from Mrs. Winks; Mrs. Stevens beat Miss M. C. Power; Mrs. Bull , beat Mrs. Stevens; Mrs. R. Wylie beat Mrs. Winks, Mrs. Bull beat Mrs. Stevens. In the final played yesterday afternoon Mrs. L. J. Bull defeated Miss M. C. Power. Play for the intermediate championship continued yesterday but will not be finished until to-day.
