SOUTH TARANAKI TENNIS

ARTHUR DICKIE BEATS BROTHER. MISS J. HICKS’ WOMEN'S SINGLES. Holders of the South Taranaki residential tennis championships for the year are:— Men’s singles: Arthur Dickie; runnerup, Eric Dickie. Women’s singles: Miss J. Hicks; run-ner-up, Miss A. Graham. Men’s doubles: A. and E. Dickie; run-ners-up, P. McCarthy and M. R. Jones. Women’s doubles: Misses A. and J. Hicks; runners-up, Mesdames Duncan and Baigent. The championships were played on the Hawera club's courts on Saturday and yesterday. Some interesting tennis was provided on both days, though the standard of play was lowered yesterday by a strong gusty wind which made good control almost an impossibility at times. A feature of the first round of the men’s singles was the excellent showing of Sheild, Patea, a former Wellington College boy, who, though outclassed by McCarthy’s greater experience, gave a fine display of good shots and retrieving. Playing in the doubles with Collins, also a Wellington College pupil, Sheild gave a magnificent display against tire combined McCarthy and Jones, and in the second set the youngsters’ quickness drew frequent applause. The match was one of the best of the series, and with all four at the net the volleying was fast and exciting. Collins gave a fine display against Paterson, and his top spinning forehand drives gave Paterson much trouble.

Easiy the best match of the entire tournament was the semi-final between McCarthy and Eric Dickie, the game going to three sets. In the first and second sets, the game was thrilling, so fast and close were the rallies. Cross-court drives and angled volleys were made with commanding ease. In the first set McCarthy recovered well to 4-all and took the next two games for the set. Dickie played well in the set and always had the advantage. The final set was - a marathon. Dickie led 5—2 and McCarthy’s chances seemed hopeless. He rallied well, however, and played with fine control to take the next four games. Both held service to 8-all, when McCarthy, with two double faults, dropped his. Dickie failed to clinch the set with his service and dropped the game. Both held service to 11-all, when McCarthy again dropped his. This time Dickie made no mistake< and took the game 15 for the match. The result was a reversal of the contest at the Hawera Christmas tournament, when McCarthy beat Dickie in straight sets. PATERSON PLAYS WELL. In the other semi-final Paterson played extremely well against Arthur Dickie, making great shots on the backhand. The rallies were long and both played shots to the comers throughout. Dickie sent down fine services at critical stages. The final of the men’s singles was rather disappointing, for Eric Dickie, generally considered a better player than his brother, made too many errors off Arthur’s forcing shots. In addition, Eric served a large number, of double faults. Both players hit hard and there were long and exciting rallies. One of the surprises of the women’s singles was the easy defeat of Miss Ava Hicks by Miss Graham, whose speedy forehand garnered points galore. Miss J. Hicks and Mrs. Baigent both played well, the high wind making a vast difference to the play Both hit -hard, but Miss Hicks with snappy interceptions' at the net won deciding points. The path of the Dickie brothers to the final of the men’s doubles was singularly easy and even in the final they encountered no great resistance. The chief reason for their win lay in their excellent combination, and' though Eric showed weakness overhead, the weakness was not great enough to have any great effect. The final of the women’s singles was a triumph for Miss Hicks, who was beaten last year by Miss Graham. Both hit with terrific pace for women, and the flat forehand and backhand drives were always fast and well directed. Both showed ability at the net, but Miss Hicks adapted herself to the conditions better than Miss Graham. Detailed results are:— Men’s Singles. First round: H. Jones beat B. CliffordJones by default.
