COMMUNISM CHARGE
MR. EVELYN STRACHEY HEARD. QUESTION OF DEPORTATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.30 p.m. Chicago, March 21. Mr. Evelyn John Strachey, the British author and former member of Parliament, who was arrested on a charge of entering the United States by a false declaration, appeared before the Immigration Board to-day for a formal deportation hearing and report, which will be forwarded to the Department of Labour at Washington for a final decision. The questioners read from Mr. Strachey’s writings and attempted to show that he believed in the violent overthrow of the Government. They also quoted from the writings of Marx Engels requesting Mr. Strachey to comment on them. His defence was that while he was a believer in Communism he was not a member of the party, and that he had not urged violence in any American lectures.
Mr. Strachey will be allowed a more detailed defence hearing to-morrow.
