HORSES FOR AWAPUNI
HAWERA’S CANDIDATES EXCELLENT FORM DISPLAYED. EGMONT JUBILEE MEETING. (By “Limited.”) Booked to leave Hawera by train today for Awapuni to take part at the Manawatu meeting to-morrow and Saturday, J. Fryer has March Alone, Run, Panloff, Onewhetu and Puroto; C. Jackson has Aga Khan and Diagano; J. Brown has Arouse and Harvest Moon. Arouse got down on his heels badly yesterday and may not make the trip. M. Conway is already at Awapuni with Ingenuity. March Alone, who will be ridden by J. Mcßae in the hurdle race, has schooled well during the week and showed improvement in his jumping. Ruri, Onewhetu and Panloff were given fast work yesterday morning and are m excellent order. Ruri and Onewhetu went particularly well on the easy going. Panloff appears to have lightened up a little but is a wiry sort. Puroto wifi be having her first race and should benefit by the experience. Aga Khan likes the course and is in fine racing trim. He can be expected to run prominently in his races. Aga Khan went attractively in his final gallops on Tuesday. Yesterday morning he was given a working gallop but was not out for time. Diagano has been showing good tracK work without anything sensational in the way of time. He also has won on the course and has only to strike his true form to do his owner-trainer another good turn. Harvest Moon is in splendid order and seldom runs a bad race. The Awapuni course should suit him admirably. R. Feasey is to ride Ruri, who appears to be in great order. Ruri ran second at Awapuni last year to Taitoru, and his turn should not be far away. Ruri has been doing resolute track work. Feasey will also ride the two-year-old Puroto. G. Duncan will ride Onewhetu and Panloff, and one of T. Knapp’s horses in the Trial Plate. Change of Dates Approved.
The Racing Conference has approved the change of dates applied for by the Egmont Racing Club from May 9 and 11 to May 4 and 6, the latter being the date of the King’s jubilee celebrations and a public holiday. The Egmont Racing Club is out to make the fixture—which practically opens the steeplechase season in the North Island—an outstanding success and has framed a very attractive programme,
giving over £2OOO in stake?. On the first day of the meeting there will be seven races, including .the Egmont Steeplechase of £2OO, Mcßae Memorial, £175, and Open Flying, £l3O. On the Monday there will be eight races. A big attraction will be the King’s Jubilee Cup, hack conditions, of £2OO, including a handsome gold cup valued at £5O. The Davidson Memorial is endowed to the extent of £l5O, and the Mokoia Flying Handicap £l2O. The . hurdle and other hack events are also well endowed, no race carrying less than £lOO. The club has every confidence in the May meeting being one of the most successful gatherings held for many years.
