HAWERA RUGBY CLUB
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOTBALL. REPORT TO THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Hawera Rugby Football Club was held on Tuesday night, Mr. L. H. Clapham presiding over a good attendance. The annual report stated that eight teams took part in the competitions and though none won a championship the football played by the teams was an improvement on the previous season. A friendly game was played by the first junior team against a Johnsonville team at Hawera, the result being a win by a fair margin for Hawera. Johnsonville was entertained after the match by the home team. The third and fourth grade teams both visited Wanganui and played friendly games against teams in their grade division, the third grade drawing and the fourth grade winning its match after good games. The active members’ subscriptions showed a decided increase on the previous season, being £l3 2s against £5 9s 6d. The honorary members’ subscriptions dropped from £9 8s 6d to £7 19s 6d. Refunds from the union were £l9 6s 3d, compared with £ll 2s for the 1933 season. The senior team travelled 324 miles under the scheme played last season and entailed a good deal more expense. If the present scheme continued the incoming committee would •have to make some levy on the players in order to help the finances of the club. Thanks were expressed to all those supporters who had helped the club financially and otherwise. To conclude as a wind-up for the season a social evening, which proved successful, was held in the Scout’s Hall. There was a large attendance of supporters, players and friends. During the evening the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, presented medals allotted during the season as follows: Junior, G. McDonald, donated by Mr. W. O’Brien; third, B. Clapham, donated by Mrs. La Pouple; fourth, P. Oakes, donated by Sergeant Henry. A credit balance of £l5 Is 4d was shown on the balance sheet.
