NEXT BAND CONTEST
NEW PLYMOUTH AS THE VENUE. TOWN'S “UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY." “This is a thing we ought to support,” said Mr. W. C. Weston, producing a guarantee form for the 1936 national band contest at New Plymouth. “I would like to see many of our members supporting this.”, Thor- present agreed with the chairman's sentiments. Mr. V. Garth, representing the band committee, said £lOOO was the sum required. . The Timaru contest had returned a profit of £4OO. “This is a golden opportunity," added Mr. Garth, “to place New Plymouth on the map. At Timaru the grounds were up to five miles away from the town, yet 12,000 people paid for admission. At New Plymouth the g-und is central, and with up to 700 bandsmen visiting the town it is a great opportunity to advertise the town.”
Mr. Garth suggested that a shopping week in conjunction should return a profit of up to £6OO. They had had a hard task to have New Plymouth agreed to a; the venue for the next contest. The request had been acceded to provided the £lOOO guarantee could be raised.
Without any canvassing, said Mr. Garth, £2OO had already been guaranteed.
