RUGBY REFEREES
INTEREST IN CENTRAL DIVISION. ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. That interest in Rugby refereeing is not on the wane in the central division was demonstrated by the enthusiasm of members who attended the annual meeting of this division of the Taranaki Rugby Referees’ Association last night. Of a total membership of 28 more than half were present. Mr. W. Eagar presided. A satisfactory membership of 28, including two life members, was mentioned in the report as a highly gratifying feature as was the fact that the bi-weekly meetings had been well attended. During the season the association controlled 120 games, both competition and friendly. Sometimes referees were supplied under great difficulties. Mr. Davis, of the senior appointment board, had done splendid work, meriting the thanks of the association. Thanks were also tendered to Mr. L. J. Furrie for his representation of the referees’ interests on the Taranaki Rugby Union and to Mr. C,. Pellowe, who acted as secretary to the association. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit of 16s 6d. The season opened with a credit balance of £2 6s 6d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted after a brief discussion.
Showing how difficult was the work of the junior appointment board, it was mentioned that one week, of the seyen referees appointed, only three were found to be available on the Thursday morning. This was no isolated case. Under such circumstances fresh arrangements had to be made at a moment’s notice, necessitating a considerable amount of toll telephoning. In this connection it was found that certain charges had been paid out of the chairman’s pocket without any account being rendered. To obviate this position a motion was adopted asking that all accounts, whether incidental or otherwise, should be rendered to the secretary.
A. welcome was extended to Mr. A. Davis, a life member of the Taranaki Rugby Referees’ Association and a financial member of the North Taranaki division of the association. Mr. Davis, who has taken up his residence at Stratford, was elected a member of the central division.
It was decided for the first time to appoint a patron, and the Hon. R. Masters, M.L.C., was elected to the position. Other officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. R. R. Tyrer; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Eagar, executive of the Referees’ Association, F. Brisco, G. P. Harkness; delegates to the executive of the Referees’ Association, Messrs. A. O’Sullivan and J. Robson; junior appointment board, Messrs. W. Eagar, A. Davis (Stratford), G. P. Harkness (Midhirst); representative on the senior appointment board and to the representative match appointment board, Mr. F. Brisco; nominee to the Taranaki Rugby Union, Mr. L. J Furrie; advisory board, Messrs. A. Davis, G. W. Were and A. O’Sullivan; classification committee, junior appointment board; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. Pellowe. An honorarium of £4 4s was voted the secretary and appreciation of his services was expresed by members. Messrs. G. Graham (Stratford), J. Shaw (Inglewood), D. Moore (Stratford), A. Wilmshurst (Stratford) were elected members.
