JERSEY FIELD DAY

STRATFORD CLUB EVENT. DEPARTURE FROM USUAL. A departure from the usual type of field demonstration, in which a lecturer only points a cow up, was made at the annual field day of the Stratford Jersey Cattle Club yesterday when the classification scheme of the association, introduced three years ago, was used. The venue of the fixture was Messrs. Clemow Bros, property, .Opunake Road, Stratford, Mr. C. Clemow being president of the club. The demonstrator was Mr. Guy Bell, Oakura. He had three cows in the ring for the demonstration, typical of the three C^ S 1" fications—v.h.c., h.c. and c. Mr. Bell dealt with the difference between tne animals and explained how the classification worked throughout New Zealand. In addition to the v.h.c. cow was one of her progeny, a two-year-old bull that was reserve champion at the last Stratford spring show and Mr. Bell was able to use the pair as a practical illustration of how the cow was breeding. Cow judging competitions were held for adults and juniors. Six cows, six heifers and four bulls were placed m the ring and the public was asked to judge the animals and place, them in order of merit according to individual opinion. There was also a competition for judging the amount of milk produced by each of the six cows, since they calved, the dates of calving being given. The marking of the papers for the production competition could not be completed in time for announcement but the cow judging results are: Senior, Mr, W Crosby (Waipuku) 1, Mrs. E. C. Miles (Hawera) 2, Mr. F. Crosby (Waipuku) 3; junior, Hugh Lilley (S.T.H.S.) 1, Selina Thomas (S.T.H.S.) 2. The trophies were presented by Mr. Bell, who complimented the club on its choice of cups as prizes instead of Heifers for the demonstration were lent by Mr. E. J. Kirkwood, Stratford, a bull by Mr. Mander, Cardiff and the rest of the stock by Clemow brothers. Lunch and afternoon tea were provided by a committee of women who were thanked for their hospitality as were Messrs. Clemow for the use of their property. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. C. A. Cooper, who has been resident at Eltham for many years, is leaving to join the staff of Mollers’ Ltd. New Plymouth, at the end of this week. Mrs. Cooper will be much missed as a member of the croquet club and Plunket Society.

At the annual meeting of the Stratford Golf Club tribute was paid to the many years of loyal service rendered by two of the retiring members of the committee, Mr. H, W. Douglas and Mr. T. A. Urwin. When the club changed over to the new course Mr. Douglas willingly joined the guarantors when assistance was needed. At that time and since Mr. Urwin’s qualifications as an engineer and surveyor have been generously placed at the disposal of the club and have been of immense value in the laying out and tile improvement of the present course. The loss suffered by the district through the death of Mrs. H. A. Foreman, Tikorangi, wife of the chairman of the Clifton county, was referred to by Mr. N. R. Cleland, chairman of the Whangamomona County Council, at a meeting of the council on Tuesday. Mrs. Foreman came from an old pioneering family at Ngaere, he said, and had always taken an interest in the affairs of the county. The council passed a vote of condolence with the bereaved husband and family.
