FAVIER-AKAMA ROADS

METALLING SCHEME READY. STATEMENT BY PUBLIC WORKS. A further step towards the realisation of the scheme for the metalling of the Favier, Akama and Loop roads in the Whangamomona county was reached at a meeting of the council on Tuesday. The council has been negotiating since 1930 for the completion of the scheme and it now appears matters are almost ready for the work to be started. It was proposed to metal 53 chains of the Loop Road, 45 chains of Akama Road, and 43 chains of Favier Road, wrote the Public Works district engineer, Mr. P. Keller. This was in accordance with the litho forwarded to the council on September 25, 1930, except that the 27 chains of the Loop Road, from Akama Road junction to the main highway, was to be omitted. A further letter advised that it was proposed to make the Loop and Favier roads 9ft wide by 6ins deep, also part of the Akama Road as far as Mr. West’s tum-off; from that point to Mr. Yandle’s the width was to be Bft, subject to the council’s approval.

“I hear from Mr. Yandle that it is the intention of Mr. West and himself to proceed with the original idea of a deviation through Mr. West’s property,” continued Mr. Keller. “If this idea is carried out it means a further delay, which under the circumstances is quite unnecessary.” Several councillors expressed doubts whether six inches of metal would be sufficient on the roads, and on the motion of Cr. M. P. Ford it was decided to write to the district engineer pointing out that it was understood the same kind of material as that used on the Tawiri Road would be used, and that the council did not think six inches of that material was sufficient.

Regarding the last statement regarding the deviation proposed by Mr. Yandle, the council expressed its agreement with the attitude of the Public Works Department and favoured adhering to the arrangement made recently between the deparment and Mr. Yandle.
