PUKEKURA PARK

“HUGHES WALK” DECIDED ON. FINANCE COMMITTEE SET UP. At a meeting of the Pukekura Park committee at New Plymouth on Tuesday night it was decided to constitute a finance committee comprising Messrs. C. E. Bellringer and P. E. Stainton and the Hon. James McLeod to investigate the entire question of park finance and draw up a schedule of estimates for operation in the coming financial year. It was pointed out that definite estimates would permit control of development and maintenance work within the parks areas and give a clear indication of what standard the committee could maintain with available finance. Furthermore the borough council would be completely in touch with the position. The meeting, at which Mr. F. Amoore presided, also referred an application by the Taranaki Rugby Union for use of the sportsground, to the sportsground committee.

Following discussion of the most suitable means of perpetuating the memory of the late Mr. R. C. Hughes, who did valuable service over a life-time for the parks of New Plymouth, the committee decided to name the walk from Victoria Road to Vogeltown walk under the large pines in Pukekura Park, “The Hughes Walk” and erect a suitable name inscription. It was recalled that Mr. Hughes had been fond of this particular part of the park and a sub-committee comprising Messrs. W. F. Short, Amoore and Stainton were appointed to arrange details.
