CYCLE ROAD RACE

NORM AN BY SHOW EVENT. RAE FIRST; LANDERS FASTEST. The cycle road race run in conjunction with the Normanby Horticultural Society’s show yesterday afternoon resulted in a win for A. W. Rae, Scott Road, who, from the 11-minute mark, completed the course of approximately 15 miles in 41m 31Js. W. Jewell, Normanby, was second, and O. P. Busby, Inaha, was third. L. Landers, Hawera, with a handicap of ss, secured fastest time, completing the course in 39s 50s. C. Mana, New

Plymouth, who rode from scratch and conceded handicaps up to 14m, secured next fastest time, completing the distance in 40m 945. G. Dombroski, Normanby, secured third fastest time, 40m 335. Rae won comfortably by 50 yards. Jewell and Busby fought out second place, the former winning by a wheel. The course was from Normanby to Okaiawa, down Ahaipaipa Road to South Road at the top of the Riverdale hill, along South Road and back to Normanby along Ketemarae Road, finishing outside the horticultural hall. The race was conducted by officials of the Hawera Ramblers’ Cycle Club. The start and finish were witnessed by large crowds, and a number of cars followed the competitors around the course. There, were 26 starters, including riders from New Plymouth, Stratford and Eltharn, and all completed the course.

The riders made good time with a following wind to Okaiawa, and positions were not changed to any extent. The head wind on South Road steadied the pace, and determined to a great extent the finishing positions of the riders. The riders had a good run up Ketemarae Road, and there were some close finishes. J. Ludlam, Stratford, secured fastest time for juniors under 17. His time was 40m 5045. A special prize‘for the rider under 16 who had won no other, prize and was closest to the finish was won by A. Campbell, whose time was 41m 3645.
