WORK AT TRENTHAM

LE GRAND’S GOOD HALF-MILE. ORBY’S LAST PERFORMS WELL. Work at Trentham was not very interesting on Tuesday morning, states the Wellington Evening Post. The weather was overcast though fine, and the plough track, which was very fast, was used exclusively. Red Sun (G. Ridgway) and Sunee (J. K. Robertson) ran in their usual attractive manner to record Im. 2 3-ss. for five furlongs, the last half-mile in 495. They finished on terms. Acceptable, who will be ridden by G. Humphries on Saturday, did a couple of rounds of pacing. Te Ua did a similar task, and Darecourt sharpened up only down the straight. Le Grand (A. Leach) showed something of what might be expected from a colt of his breeding in beating Fulojoy (R. Smith) by three lengths over half a mile in 49 2-ss. Le Grand, who earlier in the season suffered from shin soreness, is now steadily improving. Pegged Exchange (Ridgway) ran six furlongs in lm. 18s., the last half-mile in 52 2-55., but he did not appear seriously after figures. He has not yet raced this season, but he is looking very fit. Orby’s Last (S. Wilson) stood the two-year-old Shirley Dene (D. .Wilson) up a couple of lengths ?t the five furlongs and beat his mate home by a length and a-half in lm. 2 4-55., the last half-mile in 49 l-ss. It was a pleasing effort, but the filly was conceding him weight. ' Conversion (Ridgway) was too good for Starma (R. Burgess) over half a mile in 50 2-ss. Shy (E. Burgess) was clear of Dark Red (R. Burgess) at the end of an easy five furlongs in lm. 75., the last half-mile in 53 2-ss. The most attractive piece of work during the morning was Princess Doreen’s defeat of Might over a mile. The mare was ridden by Wilson and Might by N. Vaughan. Might jumped away two lengths clear, running the first two furlongs in 265. and the first halfmile in 51s. At the top of the straight Princess Doreen drew past her companion, and although Might was closing again at the finish the mare was still half a length ahead at the post. The mile was done in the exceptionally good time of lm. 40 4-55., starting from when Might passed the mile post s Princess Doreen has « accepted for both the Thompson and the Railway on Saturday. She will start in the former unless rain falls, in which case the sprint will be her race. L.' J. Ellis will ride her if she runs in the Thompson, otherwise S. Wilson, whose Thompson mount will be Miss Husabye, will have the mount. Vinco (Smith) finished half a length in front of Delium (Ridgway) at the end of five furlongs in lm. 3 l-55., the last half-mile in 49 4-55., but Delium worked well nevertheless. Arctic Star (P. Burgess) and Sansfoy (D. Bush) did six furlongs comfortably in lm. 19s. Debham (Smith) was a length and ahalf ahead of Going Gay (Wilson) after running half a mile in, 49 2-ss. Verden (E. Burgess) was again too good for the lazy Chile (P. Burgess) over a mile in lm. 465., the first half in 525. and the last half in 565. Billy Boy (E. Burgess) acted as tutor for Linoleum (Smith) and Field Spy (Ridgway) in a bout over the schooling hurdles. Linoleum jumped seven fences and Field Spy five, the novices acquitting themselves satisfactorily. Nova Scotia (P. Burgess) schooled alone over six fences, improving as he went along.
