SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC

KAPONGA ANGLICAN GATHERING.

Favoured with ideal weather, the scholars of St. Mark’s Anglican Sunday school and their teachers went to Opunake on Saturday for the annual picnic. About 40 children were taken to the beach in a lorry and private cars and about 30 parents were present. A series of races was run, and treasure hunts for the children were held. The picnic was under the direction of the Rev. A. J. Farnell, vicar of the parish, assisted by the Sunday school teachers and members of the ladies’ guild. Dona-. tions of sweets were made by Messrs. Libeau and Fallows. Mr. F. N. Gardner refunded a portion of lorry hire towards sports prizes.

General and Personal. » Mr. A. Melville, superintendent, presided at Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Kaponga fire brigade, when there was a large attendance. Mr. Melville, who represented the brigade at the recent Dominion conference at Blenheim, gave a resume of the work of the conference.

Mr. R. E. McCarthy, Of the Waihi postal staff, is paying a holiday visit to Kaponga. Mr. J. McPhillips, Manaia Road, is receiving treatment at the Wanganui hospital. He recently suffered an injury to an eye from a boxthorn twig, and it is feared the loss of the sight of one eye will result. PLUNKET GARDEN PARTY. COUNTRY BABY FUNDS. In aid of the funds for the Country baby in the Plunket carnival a garden party was held at “Glenholm,” Hawera, yesterday, a large number attending. Stalls, side shows and tennis proved the attractions and a display of folk dancing by pupils of the Hawera Main school under Miss Murray was attractive. Those in charge of the stalls were:— Tea, Mesdames G. W. Powdrell, R. P. Baigent, H. M. Besley and S. R. Veitch; sweets, Misses A. Kemp, M. Bright,. C. Tonks and P. Lovell; produce, Mesdames Adams and R. H. Leece; tennis, Mr. R. H. Leece; conjuring, Mr. E. K. Cameron, assisted by Mr. M. Niccol; golf, Mr. P. 0.. Veale, assisted by Mr. Johnson;. croquet, Mrs. J. W. Harding; side shows. Messrs. G. W. Powdrell and Caselberg. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. Henry Mulholland, formerly of Normanby, died yesterday at Wanganui after a brief illness at the age of 77. He was formerly the proprietor of the Commercial Hotel at Normanby and was well known in the Taranaki, Wanganui and Wairarapa districts as a hotel licensee. In the early days of coaching he was well known as a carrying contractor. He was a member of the Armed Constabulary and took part in the Parihaka incident. His wife died 18 months ago. Miss A. Mulholland, Wanganui, is the only child.

Appreciation of the service of Miss K. Syms, who has resigned from the teaching staff of the Normanby school, was expressed at a meeting of the school committee on Monday evening. Mr. C. L. Hay has been appointed a member of the Normanby school committee to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. C. W. Hardway.
