UNOFFICIAL RECORDS

TARANAKI SWIMMING DISTANCES. CARNIVAL, HELD AT HAWERA. Two Taranaki swimming records were unofficially broken at a special carnival arranged by the Hawera Swimming Club at the Municipal Baths on Monday night. In the 50 yards, scratch race T. J. Haughton, Stratford, broke his own record of 26 4-5 seconds by one-fifth of a second, and in the 10C yards breaststroke, V. B. Haworth, Central, Wanganui, reduced the record time from Im 22J s to lm 16s. Although no announcement was made at the carnival, it is probable that recognition of Haughton’s record will be applied for, but as Haworth’s performance was in a handicap event it is doubtful whether the centre would pass the record. The carnival was one of the best of the season, and the presence of a large team from the Central and Gonville clubs, Wanganui, added considerably to the attractions of the swimming. Hawera gave Central a sound thrashing in the water polo, scoring four goals to one.

The Taranaki intermediate boys’ diving championship was also, staged for a second time. It was previously held at the junior and intermediate championships at Hawera some time ago, and later declared void by the centre. A. Buist, Hawera, was the winner on that occasion, N. Turnbull, Stratford being second and L. Hannan, New Plymouth, third. On Monday night, in a poor display of diving, Buist was again the winner, holding an advantage over Turnbull.- There were no other competitors. The dives comprised a running plain dive off the low board, and a back dive and half-screw off the high board. Both competitors made awkward entries off the high board, Buist showing out better than Turnbull, who made a full screw.

Though Haughton’s and Haworth’s performances were outstanding some other good ones were put up. J. P. Carde, Central, swam a splendid race against a big handicap in the 100 yards open, returning a time a shade over a minute to get second. In the 50 yards scratch race six lined up and from a good start Haworth and Carde quickly clapped on a lead of three yards at the turn. Haughton had swum well and a brilliant turn brought him up with the leaders. In effortless style he ploughed along to beat Haworth by a touch in an exciting race. Haughton swam in his best form and seemed to have plenty in hand at the finish. V. B. Haworth, -the Wanganui golf champion and a well-built youngster, gave a great display in the breaststroke. He conceded up to 24 seconds and in the final spurted all the way down the last stretch to win by a foot.

Another exciting race was the 100 yards inter-club relay, won by Central in the excellent time of 51 seconds.
