MATIERE STOCK SALE

EWES SELL AT LATE RATES. (Special to Daily News). Taumarunui, March 9. There was a large yarding of sheep, cattle and pigs at Messrs. Dalgety and Co.’s Matiere sale yesterday and buyers were present from Taranaki, Waikato, Ohura and Taumarunui. There was good competition for the shaep, and ewes sold up to late rates. Lambs were a little easier, but vendors met the market and the whole yarding was disposed of under the hammer or at the conclusion of the sale. Cattle sold well, and there was a

fair demand for pigs at prices slightly below late rates. Quotations are:—

Sheep: Wether lambs, 12s, 13s, 13s Id to 13s 3d; w.f. lambs, 13s 3d; b.f. lambs, 13s 4d to 13s 6d; ewe lambs, 21s 6d; m.s. lambs, 10s lid to Hs 3d; f.m. ewes, 9s to 12s 4d; two-tooth ewes, 20s sd, 23s 6d to 23s lid; five-year ewes, 16s 3d; four and five-year ewes, 14s 2d to 22s id; twotooth wethers, 18s 6d to 19s 8d; fat wethers, 23s Bd.

Cattle: Fat cows, £3; good steers, £2 15s;. heifers, 32s to £2; empty cows, £1 to £2. Pigs: Small weaners, 2s 6d to 5s 6d; larger sorts, 7s to Ils. Romney rams made from 13 to sJgns. One fat lamb sold on account of Miss M. McDonald, Matiere, was purchased by an export buyer for 24s 6d. \ '

ELTHAM SEASON CONCLUDES.

FITZROY WINS POLO MATCH.

The swimming season was brought to a conclusion at Eltham on Monday night. The 5 relay race was the most exciting event, an Argus team winning the final in a close finish.

The president, Dr. D. H. Saunders, in presenting the buttons to the winners, referred to the successful season and thanked the officials for this assistance. The races resulted:—

25 yards, schoolgirls:—First heat: J. Carson 1, P. Cooper 2, P. Peebles 3. Second heat: N. Taylor 1, J. Death 2, B. Bridger 3. Final: J. Carson (Is) 1, N. Taylor (7s) and P. Cooper (scr) dead heat 2. 25 yards, schoolboys: A. McKay 1, A. Taylor 2, C. Rye 3. 50 yards intermediate: W. Ware 1, J. Haworth 2, K. Horrocks 3. Junior open dive: E. Cooper (23 points) 1, Jean Carson (20 points) 2, Betty Bridger (17 points) 3. Girls’ blindfold race: Pauline Peebles L . T r. Junior girls* 50 yards: Miss Jean Carson (9s) 1, Miss Pat Cooper (9s) 2, Miss May Gower (scr) 3. Corfu dive: Miss M. Gower 1, A. Bridger 2. • 50 yards, men:—First heat: K. Horrocks (ss) 1, L. Ware (2s) 2, J. Williams (7s) 3. Second heat: Crombie (4s) 1, Bennett (3s) 2, J. Ryan (3s) 3. Final: L. Ware 1, Horrocks 2, Crombie 3. Women’s dive: Miss M. Gower (215 points) 1, Miss E. Peebles (20 points) 2. Men’s dive: F, Maslin (205 points) 1, L. Ware (20 points) 2. Relay race:—First heat: Footballers 1, High School 2, Midgets 3. Second heat: Fitzroy and Argus dead heat 1, High School Girls 3. Final: Argus (Bs)' 1, Fitzroy (scr) 2. The Argus team was Ricketts, Bridger, Williams, Shepard. The programme concluded with a polo match between Fitzroy and Eltham, the former winning by two goals to one. The first goal was scored by Shepard. Fitzroy pressed hard and kept Eltham defending, Ryan scoring just before halftime. Glentworth had much defence to do at the deep end and finally Hunter secured a goal to decide the match. The winner was then presented with a special cup for annual competition between the two teams. The teams were:—Eltham: Glentworth, G. Williams, Maslin, Ricketts, L. Ware, T Horrocks, D. Shepard. Fitzroy. R. Rogers, B. Hunter, A. Crombie, J, Ryan, 1,. Charters, J. Spedding, L. Bennett.
