HELP FROM ENGLAND

RETURNED MEN IN NEW ZEALAND. FORMER IMPERIAL SOLDIERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night During his tour of New Zealand, General Sir Alexander Godley took a keen and sympathetic interest in the problems of ex-servicemen and the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association has ar-? ranged to furnish him with information relative to ex-imperial soldiers in New Zealand with a view to prosecuting the claims of the Dominions for assistance from the war relief funds available in Great Britain. “It is a burden we cannot very well carry,” stated Mr. S. Harrison, general secretary of the R.S.A. They take the stand in England when a man goes overseas that he automatically becomes * citizen of the country in which he settles and that country should be responsible for his welfare.

Mr. Harrison said there were 20,000 ex-Imperial men in New Zealand who were eligible for assistance from the local funds. Since 1927 various funds had expended at least £230,000 on ex-service-men generally. The canteen fund, which had been built up to £250,000, was down to £lBB,OOO at the beginning of last year.
