WAIHI COLLIE CLUB

PREPARING FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. ANNUAL MEETING BUSINESS. From the enthusiasm displayed at the annual meeting on Monday night the Waihi-Waitara Collie Club, which has been allotted the centre championships this year, will have another successful season. Arrangements are. already well in hand. Mr. J. T. H. Robinson, chairman of tne committee, who presided, expressed appreciation at the attendance which augured well for the coming season. The trials last year had proved successful from every viewpoint. The change of ground to Tikorangi had been appreciated by competitors, and the more difficult course had resulted in a high standard of work. Despite the extra expense, there had been a profit on the year’s working, which reflected great credit on the secretaries. This year the group championships had been allotted to the club, so that the meeting should prove even more successful and interesting, as It was expected that all the best dogs in Taranaki would be competing. The committee therefore would have to make special preparations in keeping with the Importance of the gathering. The balance sheet showed that receipts had been £5l 15s 3d, the principal items being entry fees £25 14s 6d,. proceeds from dance £lO 5s lOd, members tickets £5 ss, gate £4 2s, sheep. guessing £3 15s 6d, donations £2 6s. Expenditure totalled £4B 3s 2d, the principal items being prize money £23 3s 3d, North Island Association £3 7s. There was a credit of £lO 5s lOd, as compared with £7 0s 2d at the beginning of the year. Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr. F. Sarten; president, Mr. F. W. Mathews; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. M. Purdie and H. A. Foreman; hon. secretaries, Messrs. J. M. Purdie and N. Edwin; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. M. Draper; auditor, Mr. L. H. Sampson; general committoe, Messrs. R. Sarten, A. R. Whitehead, J. Edwin, F. Sarten, A. Northcott, C. Ritchie, C. Carmichael, J. Herbert, P. Cole, R. Pennington, H. R. Honeyfield, H, Fitzsimmonds, W. H. Watson, A. Cole, J. Cole, J. Draper, C. Topless, D. Jones; executive, Messrs. J. Edwin, J. Herbert, A. Northcott, C. Carmichael, A. Parli and J. T. H. Robinson.

It was decided that the programme should include the three standard classes, long head, short head and huntaway. In. addition there will he an open maiden heading event. There will be numerous special prizes and trophies. It. was also decided, with a view to encouraging veterans to compete, to provide a trophy for competition among competitors who had not won a first prize during the past five years in open competition, a condition being that they must run a maiden dog. The trophy will be awarded for aggregate points in classes I. and 11. The trials will be held on. May 2, 3 and 4. Mr. S. Voyce, Pio Pio, will be judge. Mr. J. Edwin was appointed delegate to attend a meeting of the , centre at Hawera. He was given a free hand to vote on the remit from the ElthamTakau Club regarding the levy on prize money for district championship cups. It had been decided by the district committee that in order to assist the club conducting the group championships, ail clubs should deduct Is in £1 for all first prize money and 6d in £1 for minor awards in the three open classes. That money is utilised to provide three silver cups for the ehamp’onship events, these cups to be won outright. Mr. A. Northcott considered that there should be no necessity to provide cups, as the North Island Association provided a gold medal to go with each championship. As there were only two championship meetings yet to be held to complete the first series, it was considered by the majority of the members that cups should be provided until the series' had been completed, when the whole question could be reconsidered. It was decided to hold a dance on May 3. The women’s institute is to be approached with a view to undertaking the catering. The chairman thanked all who had assisted to prepare the new course last year. There had been some very heavy work to be done.
