FALLS REFORMED

TORRENT IN THE GORGE. CHANGES ON EAST EGMONT. Although practically no damage was done to the road and tracks on the Stratford side of Mount Egmont during the recent heavy rain, there is evidence of a terrific rush of water having passed through the Manganui Gorge. In the lower part of the reserve the sides of the gorge are strewn with huge heaps of timber, some of it at a great height up the sides, indicating the large quantity of water which must have come down.

Prior to 1926 there existed a few chains below the Curtis Falls on the Manganui River a second fall, but at that time it was changed to rapids by a slip of rocks from the side of the gorge. The almost unbelievable force of the recent flood has removed the boulders and thus reformed the waterfall, which is. about 25 feet in height. At the head of the gorge there is proof of the force of the torrent, for at the spot where the track of the Manganui Hut crosses the gorge, a place where normally no water flows, a huge rock weighing many tons has been moved about 20 feet down the bed.
