SCOTS AT HAWERA

SOCIETY’S ANNUAL MEETING YEAR’S ACTIVITY REVIEWED. The high standard of previous years had been upheld, despite a drop “in membership, and the gatherings held by the society had been of outstanding merit, said the chief, Mr. D. McCormick, in his annual report to the Hawera Scottish Society last night. The monthly socials had been well patronised and the concerts much appreciated. Hallowe’en, the children’s night, was an outstanding success, but, as the annual Caledonian sports gathering and concert were being held at Manaia on January 23 it was deemed inadvisable to hold the Burns’ Night festival at Hawera on January 25. The society, with the assistance of the choir, had helped to provide entertainment for the benefit of the Boy Scouts at Otakeho, the fire brigade at Manaia,

those in the Old People's .Home at Hawera, and the Mercy Jenkins Boys’ Home at Eltham. An active part was also taken in the bazaar at Hawera at the conclusion of the queen carnival. Official visits were made by the Te Kiri, Stratford and New Plymouth societies and the Auroa Pipe Band, and the visits were returned by members of the society. An enjoyable day had been spent at the annual picnic at Te Ngutu Domain. Te progress of the Hawera Highland Pipe Band was pleasing to members, and the services rendered by the band to the society were much appreciated. Although there was a small loss on the year’s working the society was healthy financially. The assets totalled £94, and there were no liabilities. There was a cash reserve of £49 in the general and piano funds. The continued loyalty of members had been very pleasing to himself and those acting in an executive capacity, said Mr. McCormick. A continuance of that support would encourage those in office to put forward their best efforts for the future progress and success of the society. Though every member had done his or her share, he wished to thank particularly Mrs. L. A. Taylor for her services

as pianiste and in connection with the choir, Messrs. J. Nairn and W. Marr for their work as masters of ceremony, Mr. D. G. Smart for the use of his office, Misses Johnston, Lamb and Worrall for clerical work, Mr. W. G. Simpson and Mr. and Mrs. H. Gibbes for donations. The. election of officers resulted: Chief, Mr. D. McCormick; chieftain, Mr. D. Wards; hon. chieftains, Messrs. J. R. Nairn and W. G. Simpson; hon. secreI tary, Mr. J. Edmondson; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. E. Campbell; delegates to provincial sports association, Messrs. McCormick, Wards and L. A. Taylor; executive, Mesdames' J. Mathieson, J. W. Velvin, J. R. Naim, F. Collins, Misses Jean Easton and Margaret Smith, Messrs. J. Kilpatrick, R. Scown, L. A. Taylor and T. Pickering; hon. auditor, Mr. J. W. Velvin. Mrs. J. Henson gave £1 Is to the choir’s funds. Supper and a dance were enjoyed after the meeting. ROAD SAFETY WORK. OHANGAI DETOUR ROUTE. Motorists who have to use the Ohangai detour south of Hawera are indebted to the Automobile Association (South Taranaki) for the excellent maimer in which the road is signposted. Even those to whom the district is completely unknown would find it difficult to miss the necessary turns. At Hawera special signs referring to the detour route have been erected to show the way out of Hawera. Every turn on the road is clearly defined by the usual yellow signs marked “Detour Route.” As the corners where it would be possible to take a wrong turn are approached signs marked “Watch for detour route” have been erected—on each side of the corner—and before the latter sign is reached motorists are warned at each approach by a red flag at ground level attached to two posts. Dangerous comers and bends, portions of narrow road and one-car bridges are well signposted, the signs in many cases being additional ones to give motorists extra protection. The road surface'is in good order, but extra care should be taken as the road is not as wide as the main highway.

The short metalled portion south of Mokoia is badly surfaced in parts, but it is understood the Hawera County Council intends to improve the surface and the corners. It was fortunate that the Tangahoe bridge on Ohangai Road withstood the tremendous strain’ imposed upon X and that the road surface was undamaged. The accumulation of timber and debris in the vicinity must be seen to be appreciated. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. A. H. Christie, Manaia, slipped and broke a small bone in her wrist on Tuesday. At the time she was on her way to Eltham to attend a farewell after-
