JERSEY CLUB DAY

HAWERA CATTLE CLUB’S EVENT.

DEMONSTRATIONS OF QUALITY.

Ideal weather favoured the field day and demonstration arranged by the Hawera Jersey Cattle Club and held at Mr. F. Hoskin’s farm, Skeet Road, Matapu, yesterday afternoon. Demonstrations on the points of dairy cows and a bull were given by Mr. G. H. Bell, Oakura, president of the New Zealand council of the Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association. There was an attendance of about 50, including Messrs. S. J. Hollard, president of the Kaponga Jersey Cattle Club, and C. Clemow, president of the Stratford Club. Arrangements were in the hands of Mr. R. McCay, secretary of the Hawera Jersey Cattle Club. Before the demonstration Mr. Hoskin's fine Jersey herd was inspected in ideal surroundings. A rope ring had been provided by Mr. Hoskin. Five cows were led into the ling and a judging competition was held. As many of those present who wished to do ■so placed the animals in what they considered was their order of merit. Mr. Bell then classified them, and those whose classification coincided with Mr. Bell’s were Miss A. Morgan. Mangatoki, Messrs. S. J. Hollard, Kaponga, and C. W. Wood. Kapuni. Messrs. Hollard, Wood and Bell gave reasons for their placings. Details of the association's classification scheme for female animals were given by Mr. Bell. It was considered that the standard set for very highly commended animals was too high, but an improvement would be made whereby .it would be easier for animals to qualify Under the classification. He stressed the in- ms of well-developed udders. At the conclusion of the demonstrations Mr. C. H. Washer, president of the Hawera Jersey Cattle Club, expressed appreciation and thanks to Mr. Bell for bis attendance and information. He also thanked Mr. and Mrs. Hoskin and family for their efforts and the ladies who had assisted with refreshments. Mr. Bell in returning thanks said that it was a pleasure to be present. In his position he felt it his duty to try to assist others.
