TWO RECORDS BROKEN

SPLENDID CARNIVAL SWIMMING CENTRE’S SUCCESS. FRENCH CHAMPIONS ATTEND. Characterised by a member of the New Zealand Swimming Council and many visitors as perfect in organisation and control, the most successful swimming carnival ever held at New Plymouth roused packed stands of spectators to heights of enthusiasm last night. The carnival was run by the Taranaki Swimming Centre on the occasion of the visit of Jean Taris and Emil Poussard, French champions. There was a succession of thrilling exhibitions and races. Two Taranaki records were broken during the carnival, Miss L. Wickham, Stratford, holder of the Taranaki women’s backstroke and breaststroke titles and records and the Taranaki women’s diving championship, brought her 100 yards breaststroke time down from Ixn 35 2-5 s to Im 31 3-ss. J. Henderson, East End, holder of the 100 yards intermediate boys’ title, reduced B. Milne’s 50 yards record of 29 l-5s to 295.

A novelty was seen in the 33 1-3 yards men’s handicap, in which it was necessary to start the competitors on handicap margins. Excellent finishes were seen in the three heats and final. The flying squadron of 400 yards fqr teams of six resulted in an easy win for Stratford, and T. J. Haughton, Stratford, holder of the Taranaki 50 yards title, won a scratch race over that distance in 27 l-ss.

An exhibition of diving such as has never been seen in Taranaki before was given by Poussard, who was preceded by W. Hassan, New Zealand champion, and M. Taris electrified the crowd with his marvellous speed and powerful action. The Taranaki water polo championship final between Hawera and New Plymouth was a fitting finale, resulting in a surprise win by Fitzroy over Hawera, the New Plymouth team rising to the occasion splendidly after a recent loss of form. ■ - • Results were:—
