VISITING ATHLETES
CANTERBURY MEN DEFEATED.
BRITISH AND FINNS SCORE.

The three touring British athletes and the two Finns appeared at an athletic meeting at Lancaster Park on Saturday. The Finns overwhelmed and overawed the Canterbury athletes as they competed almost continuously in one event after another. Perasalo hurt his heel with a spike which pressed up through the sole, of the shoe and was unable to do his best, but he was still impressive. The British runners made the Canterbury champions look very awkward and ineffective, running with perfect style. Following are the results of the invitation events:—
220 yards: J. B. Macfarlane scr. 1, E. H. Wickham Byds 2, C. S. Barrell 4yds 3. Time, 22 l-ss. Rampling did not start.
440 yards: G. L. Rampling (Great Britain) scr. 1, E. P. Newburgh 15yds 2, A. T. Anderson 10yds 3. Time, 49 2-ss. Won by three yards. 880 yards: J. V. Powell (Great Britain) scr. 1, T. G. Broadway scr. 2, R. J. Hyde 25yds 3. Time, Im. 56 2-ss. Won by four yards. Two miles: R. M. Craske (Britain) 1, C. H. Matthews 2, G. H. Watson 3. Time, 9m. 27 3-ss. Won easily by 15 yards. High jump: R. G. Stead (hep. Bin.) 1, H. W. Wilkins (9in.) and F. R. Askin (7in.) equal 2, V. Perasalo (Finland) and G. M. Tiffen (Bin.) equal 4, The heights were 6ft. 2ih., 6ft. lin. and 6ft. Hop, step and jump: R. G. Pilling (3ft. 9in.) 1, F. S. Barraclough (Ift. 6in.) 2, W. S. Brettell (3ft. 6in.) 3. Distances, 46ft. 9-lin., 45ft. Ilin., 44ft. Bin. Perasalo did not jump. Putting the shot: M. Sippala (Finland) scr. 1, V. Perasalo (Finland) 2ft. 2, N. J. McPhail 6ft. 3. Distances, 43ft. 3in., 42ft. sJin., 40ft. 3in. Throwing the javelin: Sippala scr. 1, C. E. Evans (Wellington) 35ft. 2, Perasalo 35ft. 3. Distances, 194 ft. Ilin., 154 ft. Ilin.
Throwing the discus: Sippala scr. 1, N. Waghorn 30ft. 2, R. Almond 20ft. 3. Distances, 139 ft. sin., 132 ft. 10in., 117 ft. sin.
