INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC

HAWERA SCHOOLS SUFFER. AVERAGE OF 80 PUPILS AWAY. An influenza epidemic of a severe though not dangerous form is at present sweeping the Hawera schools. The epidemic is not due to the recent cold weather and rains, for it was previously noticed in virulent form. The incidence of infection is high and the attendances at most schools have been seriously depleted. At Hawera Main school last week approximately 80 pupils a day were kept away because of influenza and the other schools suffered similarly. The headmaster of one school told a News reporter that as far as the pupils of his school were concerned the trouble was that those catching the, infection were often kept away for a week or more owing to the severity of the attack. Unless conditions improved, a drop in grade for the term was likely.
